Tesla, BMW don't appear to be gearing up to join Apple's new CarPlay vision

It makes sense. BMW has invested a lot into iDrive and this system aims to fully replace it.

BMW will give in if everyone else allows for it. It's like the original holdouts for CarPlay and Android Auto.

You know you don't have to have emails on CarPlay right?

While I am not a fan of this concept... there is certainly something to be said about the universality between cars and everything functioning the same between brands. Apple Carplay has done something that in my mind was unthinkable a few years back and I think that I couldn't live without it now. There is no OEM system that can match its app library, crowdsourcing updates, usage of waze or any map app and tons of music apps... when I get a rental and it has carplay, it's all there ready for me to go... if I don't have that, I feel I just went backwards 15 years.

On the other hand, if this extended CarPlay is really a thing, your rentals will all look and feel the same. 14 brands, all with identical things on their huge screens. I don't know. I'm already not a fan of virtually identical Live Cockpit instrument clusters on all CLAR-based BMWs. Same gauges on an M340 as on an M850. Don't like that. Yes, they've always been similar, but now with digital displays it's easier and cheaper than ever to change things up from model to model.

They have no reason to be dependent on apple on supplying them with updates and such.
This would even slow down development since any bugs would need to go back and forth from a company to another. At the moment there are only disadvantages to a fully integrated CarPlay system. We’ll have to see how the entire market moves. |

The CarPlay interface already looks so dated and bland, and this “new” dashboard-wide version looks like more than the same, and clearly inspired by the simplistic graphics from the Apple Watch. I use CarPlay for maps and that’s it, I certainly wouldn’t be jumping to have this interface on the instrument cluster. BMW OS 8 looks way better. |

I am happy enough with my iDrive and how it currently works with CarPlay, if it isn't broke why fix it?.
Instead of staring at these screens how about actually enjoying your drive and seeing the world while driving a fabulous car? |

I think its ok to have carplay for many cars, the issue will come later when they start twisting car driver arms into doing stuff that would be available from OEM for free, but from Apple youll have to pay (and you wont have any alternative except have no features).
The goal is massive amounts of Data you can get from a car driving around and then monetize that data or use it for self driving to get rid of the driver. It's one thing when you have decentralised OEM setup where everyone guards their tech. It is another when Apple records 30 million cars on the road sold every year. Buy Apple... In future role of OEM at best is designing the platform and some input on designs. Having a car with 50 cameras and radars and microphones recording you and the environment around it, driven by you on your own will, is a fantastic resource that anyone from Apple to your friendly Chinese company will seek to exploit. Apple mostly for commerce, and non-friendly countries to US - mostly for espionage and security reasons. Today already most of cameras and sensors are produced in China anyway, so ... Enjoy your carplay in a dumb car. It will be a little worse later I think, but most people will love it as 98% of consumers just happy to churn through their cars on lease as long as it does the job. The guy in a used M3 is no-ones market but this forum's sponsors. Last edited by Tallest; 06-12-2022 at 02:39 PM.. |
