What I would expect on the east coast. I have no west coast experience, though.

Parking in San Francisco in the 60s and 70s frequently looked that way in some neighborhoods. But if you did that, it needed to be a short stop; otherwise, it was always possible that you'd find yourself blocked-in when you came back to your car.

FWIW, I haven't seen that look in a long time, but I'm not parking in or driving through neighborhoods where that might still be going on. My guess is it's a lot less common than it used to be.

It really feels like an act of aggression.

I get it.

Back in the day, as long as you weren't hemmed-in on both ends, it was no big deal. It was very rare that other drivers did that if it was gong to block you in. I'd see that maybe once a year or so, if that.

I mean, you can see if you're fixing it so the other guy can't get out of his parking spot, right – so, who does that?

Thing is, too, there are so many more cars on the street today. Growing up in the City, parking on the street was what you did.

Here in the Midwest now, all of my parking is in parking lots. Big ones, small ones, medium-sized ones, I'm always parking in a parking lot – or in someone's driveway that's big enough to handle all the cars coming in and still with enough room for each of them to get out when it's time to leave.

I sat in a restaurant one day watching a lady parallel park by “feel” at the curb. She backed in until she hit the car behind her (I first assumed that was a mistake). Then she pulled forward until she hit the car in front, and then backed up again until she hit the car behind her a 2nd time. It all happened very quickly.

Around here it’s not unusual in some neighborhoods to see a “Bumper Buddy”used for on-street parking. Just a thick sheet of rubber you hang over the bumper to provide some paint protection.

Pretty standard fare in Chicago proper. “Bumper buddies” are not uncommon. Thankfully I have a deeded parking space in a garage. When I was looking for a place when I first moved here if the ad said “easy street parking” I didn’t even bother looking at it. I used to pride myself on my ability to parallel park. That was in Texas where they have striped off parallel parking spaces. Not in Chicago. I am not good at getting into the small spaces people leave for others, so I don’t do it here. I usually park in a parking lot and sometimes a garage, but if I go downtown I take the L, so parking is not an issue.
