Porn filters?

Seems that quite a few days when I check out the site, 1st thing in the morning, there are new extremely graphic porn posts being posted on brand new accounts.

There's got to be something that can be done about that. I report them, and they get cleaned up eventually, but there's got to be a way to prevent them from happenning to begin with. vBulletin must have some sort of an option... Like a domain blocker, based on a site list.

I have significant experience with vB and run a large board.

Spammers have an automated program which you can find if you look. It automatically registers and posts on vB and similar boards. You will find posts for porn sites and cellphones, ipods etc. Most of them are Western Union scams.

One thing I noticed when I signed up this morning was that no email confirmation was required. That is the first step and should be 'on'.

And if the admins are reading, setting 'GD' in Image Processing Library and 'GD True Type' in the Image Verification Library (both under Image Settings in the CP) will cut down on 99% of automated spambots because they can't get past the harder CAPTCHA library.

Just doing my bit to help

Thanks, SteveG. I'll repost your comments where the admins will be sure to see it.

agreed, that is similar to a board that i moderate. we also suspend each account and only let potential members post in the "new member" forum until their account is reviewed manually and approved by a member of administration.

That's also a good idea but needs more 'human' involvement.

Another thing I do is not allow any html or even BBcode in the first 15 posts by a newb. This stops spammers doing a manual 'hit and run' posting a bunch of links or even malicious code.

I figure they're not going to hang around and post 15 times. It would be easier to go elsewhere.

Edit - to do this, you have to set up a new user group for members with less than 15 posts. Then apply the restrictions to that group. Then at 15 posts you do a promotion to 'Regular Members'.

I can help. Just email me. Tons of experience running vB.

I am pretty sure a part of the reason why bmwfreak and Harold even named four of us as Moderators was to have more people able to quickly get rid of spam and porn. I think we've been pretty effective in reducing the length of time those posts display. I've seen quite a few times that Hugo and I have been independently deleting a porn slammers account and banning that person within a minute of the post.

In all seriousness, a lot of porn links posted in forums like this will send you to a web page with malicious code. Granted most of us probably have all our AV/anti-spyware utils in place but some don't and will become part of the big spammer controlled bot-net.

Oh - I don't follow the links, absolutely not. I haven't been monkeying around in the IT industry for the past 30+ years w/o learning that one. : -)
