I have the Driving Assistant Professional package on my X1. Works pretty well on the motorway but you got to keep your hands on the wheel which isn’t too bad if you got heated steering wheel in the winter.

You only get to keep your hands off for around 10/20 seconds before warning comes on. Not actually timed it. But has anyone hacked the system yet? I tried to use this steering booster but it didn’t work unfortunately. The steering only needs very slight pressure to be applied then your good again for another 10-20 seconds.

I’ve seen some cars in US I think with Assisted Driving Plus. Can we have this in the UK please!

I'm in the US and I have Assisted Driving Plus. It is a dumbed-down cheaper version of Driving Assistance Pro.

Unlike the video you linked, in my X1, when I use Driving Assistance Plus, I do have to keep my hands on the steering wheel. (doesn't matter if I'm looking at the the road or not)

Assisted Driving Plus I think is a feature as part of Driving Assistant Professional. If you see this video, Assisted Driving Plus is shown only later when the vehicle is ready. See 3.00 on this video.

I personally know at least two Tesla owners with the fully self-driving option. I no longer ride in their cars because it scares the bejesus out of me. They have those steering hacks and sometimes just take a nap while the car drives itself on the freeway. Pardon my French, but #$^@#@*&$% I-405 in rush hour with thousands of other cars zooming by at 90mph+ is no place for full self driving cars when the driver is napping like a baby. . Definitely not when I'm riding in one as a passenger.

In the UK touching is required to stay compliant with the law, no system is yet approved as fully autonomous. Legislation is going though parliament that could make it legal in 2025.

Each car manufacture will have to apply and get the system tested before they will be able to say it’s fully autonomous and thus compliant with the new law. So pre 2025+ grab the wheel and likely the system in an X1 won’t be fully compliant with requirements to enable hands off anyway unfortunately.

I've been using adaptive cruise control since 2011 and various driving assistants from BMW and Audi since 2016. Whilst they have improved considerably, they are still a long way off autonomous driving - particularly on UK roads.

My last car, 2020 M340i was very good in most situations and I regularly used in on motorways and even around town. I even coded the traffic light assistant which worked most of the time. That said, I always considered it more of a co-pilot, never taking the hands off the wheel and ready to intervene immediately. I did make long drives more relaxing and over time you got to know when the system would struggle and you took control early.

The systems rolled out on the top models is probably even better, but I would expect hands-off driving when it comes to be tied to map data so only approved roads could be used.

Wanting to take your hands off with an X1 is asking for trouble. If you cause a serious accident doing something like that, you'd probably be facing a prison sentance. Why would you even chance that.

It really isn't. My wife has the iX1 with 5AU Driving Assistant Professional. It isn't as good as my M340i with the coding.

The bolster won’t work as the steering wheel operates using capacitive touch.

BUT, it is stupid to try to hack the system to keep your hands off the steering wheel. It’s an ASSISTANT, with level 2 autonomous driving. It is not level 3. It is definitely nowhere near good enough to continuously drive without driver control for longer than the limit allows you to. Yes, it’s gotten better, but not good enough. As another user said, other models do it better and these models are also not safe enough to be driven without driver input.

Sorry to be blunt, but if you’re looking for ways to hack the system so you don’t have to pay attention on the road or to keep your hands off the wheel, you shouldn’t be driving at all. And you will, unfortunately, learn that the hard way when the car inevitably cannot keep up.

Is that available on X1? Goes back to my previous comment the higher end models getting more advanced systems - I think 5 series / X5 and up.

The steering is fully covered in insulating material right? So how would capacitive touch work?

You can still have the hands free feature and class it as a level 2 system. This is because you would still have to focus on the road. Question is not able to hack it so you can go sleep in the back seats! I said Hands Free, not Eyes Free 👀🙄

What if I’m looking to hack the system to have a relaxed ride, can I still be allowed to drive?

If the car can ‘keep up’ in the US, why wouldn’t it be able to keep up in the UK…
