I was rinsing off the ride yesterday and noticed this when I went to wash the wheel well, what is this device? Is it for the brakes?

my X1 doesn't have that thing on any of the 4 shocks. I guess it depends on the version of the X1(U11)?

The X1 M35i has those things.

Mine is a U.S. xDrive28i with M Sport adaptive(fake) suspension, so those things are not present.

what will happen if I buy those things(#17 in the parts diagram) and mount them on my shocks? if they are only there to dampen vibrations, will they make my xDrive28i quieter?

(like the X1 in the video... the mounting point is there, but nothing is mounted on it)

Maybe that is what the clunk was or what the tea-leafs (cockney slang for thieves) were after.
I would put in a call to your dealer they might have gone the same way as the glove-box light.
I suspect the vibration will only be noticable at high speed and as you are the "slowest ever" maybe not.
I wanted to make sure, so I went down to my garage and looked at them again. The mounting bracket was on the shock, but there was nothing screwed into those screw hole. My X1 is a 2023 model with production date of 3/2023. (not a 2024 model)

can anyone with a 2023 xDrive28i(X-Line or M Sport) in the US or Canada confirm that their shocks don't have these things?

You'll go faster without the extra weight from those things.

My car is a 2023 x drive 28i with 10/23 production date and doesn't have those things, but the mounting point is there.

My MY24 28i 11/23 production has the brackets but nothing attached.

it's the same reason the my cases mice(real or toy) all the time. he doesn't really need it.

I'm just curious as to why BMW put that little metal damper thingy on some X1s.. had my friends who have the X1(U11) look at theirs.

2024 M35i in the US have them

2023 iX1(full EV X1) in East Asia has them

none of them with xDrive28i in the US have them, with or without the M Sport suspension setup.

Might have something to do with local requirements...who knows
