What is your iDrive9 software version? I live in Taiwan and I just called my dealer and they told me the function is not working now. The function may be need to wait for a software upgrade.

My 2024 X1 28i made in November came with ID9 11/2023.25 & delivered to NY in December 2023. I’ve seen no available OTA updates since. I just took it in for service for another issue & BMW service said no dealer software update is available. That was surprising because I’ve seen others on this forum say they have 11/2023.45 or .48 which they got when they took their x1 to their dealer. I’m aware that updates typically are rolled out slowly to specific areas. I don’t know where they were.

If you work out how to activate the eSIM let me know. As per the guide on how to do it there is no option in the my bmw app for 3rd party or on the portal. So while the car comes with it, it sounds stupid, but I dunno if Australia is allowed to use it?

Just for the record, can you use Firsty?
It is a e-sim provider which allow a basic plan for free with low-speed internet. I don't have a car to test it yet, but it possibly works. Let me know, I am curious |

This is an official announcement from BMW UK website.
https://faq.bmw.co.uk/s/article/Pers...language=en_GB The Personal eSIM function is not yet activated in your BMW with Operating System 9. Activation is expected to take place in the course of 2024 as part of a Remote Software Upgrade. |

Hi,
I habe just received my brand new x1 and I believe this to have come with Idrive 9( new climate control). I know the idrive 9 isn’t yet compatible with the personal eSIM but I wanted to understand if once the update is rolled out if the X1 will have this option? I called the genius but they don’t seem to understand what I’m talking about. Anyone can tell for certain if the X1 has S6PA? Thanks |

I'm not sure which Model Year (MY) you have and what region you are located, but 2025 X1/X2's in North America now have the Personal eSIM 5G (6PA) listed as standard equipment - I've included a screenshot of the 2025 pricing guides down below for additional reference! Setting up the eSIM is done via the myBMW app Based on my experience, here's a few things to note about the Personal eSIM 5G option/feature: 1. AT&T and T - Mobile are friendly, easy to work with, and easy to set up. Verizon, on the other hand, will give you a hard time; not saying its impossible to use the eSIM with Verizon, but they will charge you an activation fee ($20 I think) and overall setting up the eSIM with Verizon was more complicated. 2. If you have a business account with Verizon? You're SOL because, the last time I checked, it was not possible to use the eSIM with a Verizon business account - I would encourage you to double check if this still applies, because Verizon has no mention of this anywhere and I've only heard of this from other BMW users 3. Luckily setting up the eSIM is a one time thing! 4. Most, if not everyone using the eSIM is using it for the Wi - Fi hotspot and to enable the use of YouTube, but you can also use the eSIM as an extension of your phone and so you could leave your phone at home (you ain't gonna do that) and still have calls/text come to the car. Your calls will also be of better quality lol and the Wi - Fi uses a 5G connection! 5. I don't know about you, but I'm not very tech-savy and I don't have a whole lot of patience to play phone tag (i.e., call this person, call that person, etc.). As a result, I would simply pull up to a AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon store and set it up right then and there. Hopefully you don't run into any of these problems, but just mentioning this as a worst case scenario Additional Reference for North American Region Down below are the 3 cell carriers and what their version of the eSIM is known as: AT&T - "Numbersync for Connected Car" T - Mobile - "Magenta Drive for BMW" Verizon - "Unlimited Plan for Connected Cars" BMWusa also has a eSIM PDF guide available - just type in "BMW eSIM PDF" and it'll pop up! That said, please let me (us) know if you have any additional questions! I was able to set up my friend's eSIM (using AT&T) in his 2024 BMW M440i GC and it took us less than 3 minutes! Keep us posted! PS - If you plan on using the YouTube app? I certainly hope you have a YouTube Premium Account.... because if you don't? Have fun being bombarded with all them ads!! lol Best, Cameron |

Thanks man,
Probably one of the best answers I got to date and it starts to give me some re arrange. No Bmw nor the dealership could give me any information. The car is a 2024 model. I literally received it this week and it came with idrive9. I’m based in the UK and I hope Vodafone will support it. It supports it for watches and other things so it should be ok. If what you say is correct, Im looking forward to the SW update to enable it ! |
