Using assisted parking

We've had the car 4 months and I just got around to playing with the assisted parking.

I tried it twice with angled parking and straight parking in a wide open lot with only one car nearby.

Both times, it seemed to want to park (IMO) dangerously close to the existing parked car and not centered in the parking spot.

The parking lot was wide open so I'm not sure why it chose to park exactly next to the existing car.

Maybe it's designed to work in tight parking spots in cramped parking garages? It may work great in that situation to fit nicely between two parked cars.

What is everyone else's experience?

Use it with caution:

- check on the screen the sport it has chosen before starting the maneuver,

- don't use it if the spot is not between 2 cars. The system can misread a hedge or some landscape feature,

- during the maneuver keep your foot close to the brake pedal in case the car didn't see a shopping cart left.

As the car maneuvers pretty fast, it is a nerve wracking experience and barely leaves you enough time to check all angles like you would manually.

Once it misread the end of a parking zone and bump into the curb! A second time it didn't read a shopping cart until at the last second. A third time, it misread a wall for the limit of a spot and suggested to park me on a pedestrian passage. Another time, it left no practical space in front in a parallel park.

Room for improvement!

the X1 is the first car that I bought with parking assist. in the beginning, it made me nervous. not unlike what I experienced almost 20 years when I first bought a car(Lexus) with dynamic cruise control It was scary to relinquish control of the car to the cruise control system. However, once I got use to how it always made sure to keep the distance between me and the car ahead, I felt better. After 20 years, I cannot imagine driving any car without dynamic cruise control.

It took me about 3 months to get use to letting my X1 park for me. Now it's like second nature to me and I rarely park it myself, unless it's a tight space or have lots of pedestrians or pets around me.

I tried it in a straight parking space between two vehicles and it failed to park equidistant from the two vehicles. The one on the right had someone sitting in the drivers seat and they must of thought I was wacko for parking so close.

The other two tests were in a straight and slanted parking space with only one vehicle.

Glad to hear it's working for some but based on my tests today it's a a Fail.

I believe the manual says it won’t work for angled car spaces.

I use it all the time for parallel and 90 degree parking and trust it to do its job and I haven’t had a problem.

Just looked at the manual and that's implied by: "In addition, the system makes it easier to park out of parallel and perpendicular parking spaces."

Glad to hear it's working as advertised for you. Not sure why it's parking so close to an adjacent vehicle even when perpendicular parking. Haven't tried parallel parking yet but it's next on the list.

Yes, I just got around to trying it out. As you can see from the photos, something isn't right as it's too close to the adjoining vehicle.

I probably won't use it much if ever but since I paid extra for it I'd like it to work as advertised.

Let me know if you get it to work.

the car move so fast like a crazy driving to park or leave the parking

It's a nerve-wracking experience

Just activate the Drive Recorder and if ever it hits something by itself when parking, post it online with the title "BMW, you need to fix this".

Used auto-park all the time on my Ford Kuga where you need to keep a button pressed... This is 2020 tech. Looking forward to the faster and hands-free experience on my iX1.

In my experience, parking assist is not perfect. For starters, it is highly dependent upon cars parked around your intended parking area. Say, if there are 3 parking spots available and you are looking to back into the middle one, it will not do that. I guess the tech looks at the neighboring cars to adjust bearings and that may lead to it being parked off-centered. As system says, observe your surroundings. The system is far from perfect but it helps park in many city situations. For someone who rarely visits city to park in a parallel parking situation, system helps a lot in those tight cases.

I don't use this feature much because, as others have noted, it makes me nervous! That said, I feel like the car is easy enough to park manually because of it's size, and being a little high off the ground, so I can see beyond the bumpers of vehicles next to me when leaving a space.

Since my X1 is getting some cosmetic repairs, I'm driving my husband's Volvo S60 sedan. OOF! Was really sketchy getting out of a parking space at the gym today, as I was surrounded by other SUVs.

I'm coming around to appreciating little things like that about my X1 the more I drive it.
