E-chassis bimmer are timeless machines!

Like the title of this thread states, E-Chassis Bimmers are timeless machines IMHO. Each model is unique and different for the other model, unlike today’s bimmers that are blan and have no unique characteristics and now started to look like old Camrys from the rear like the new 5er & 7er IMHO.

- 92 E34
- 01 E38
- 04 E46 (ZHP)
- 06 E86
- 13 E82 (135is)
E-chassis bimmers

My goal is to one day own an 08 Z4 M Coupe. I’m choosing the 08 year model because I’m assuming that the bimmer engineers had 8+ years to learn from all the feedback they got and fine tuned the S54 to the best they can do.
I currently own the 3.0si w/the sport package but with an autoTragic trany. I am an anti paddle shifters type of driver. Those belong on executive cruisers and daily commuters and not on sport cars IMHO.

In general, that's a good assumption to have the last model year, but it's not necessarily true. Have a look at my rod bearing thread linked below.

Even with all the teething issues I have been through, I still love mine after 14yrs+ of ownership and still stares back at her every time I walk away.

Now that is a sex symbol right there!
Well, in the meantime I should appreciate what I have since it is not easy for such model to come by these days.

WHS. I had both an 06 E86 and 08 E85, and the 06 pulled harder. Not saying earlier is better but MY for the Z4 M really doesn’t make difference other than the aux input being standard. And I actually prefer being able to retrofit the aux on the earlier years since I can choose a more discrete location.

Lol. The E-codes covers 50 years of Bimmers. Maybe be narrow it down a bit?

I’m a Bimmerphile but I’m lot more particular in what I call timeless than every BMW made from the 60s to the 2010s…

couldn't agree more. whenever I hear of someone complaining about modern day BMWs, I tell them to go on ebay and pick out the cleanest anything from the 'E' generation of cars. they're what made BMW BMW.

I fail to see why our first BMW, an E12 530i, and our second, an E39 520i, are not on your list.

Can you please explain?

Very simple. The list I used to start the thread is for what I currently own. I’ve also owned an 87 E30 325es, 96 E36/37 Z3, 01 E46 330CI & an 08 E92 335XI but didn’t list them cause they are no longer part of my fleet

It wasn’t too long after taking delivery of my ‘03.5 e46 M3 and getting through the RIS when I had the opportunity to drive the e39 M5. The s54 felt fast as it raced to the 8k rpm redline with a constant linear pull. S62 was the complete opposite with its extra > 100 lbf-ft at a lower rpm. It would plant your butt in the seat at lower rpm and then build speed in a nonlinear fashion compared to the s54. It kicked hard with each gear shift and continued to build speed effortlessly. The e39 M5 sedan felt like a large car compared to the e46 M3 coupe. Current g8x M3/4 feels much larger than the e39 M5! Why do we need such large cars today? The size of the e46 M3 and e39 M5 were perfect. Definitely one of the best M cars.

Cool. It's an unpopular opinion, but I was completely underwhelmed when I drove my friend's E39 M5. The power was OK, but the car felt completely numb. Maybe it's the recirculating ball steering? I've never understood the hype, I'd rather have the E60 with the V10 but that's just me. My other friend had an E46 M3 back when they were new, that was a much more engaging drive to me. My buddy has a G80, you're right - she's a big girl.

It’s pretty much beyond what I would spend for a low miles clean example since the prices has skyrocketed of late to a point where it is not feasible for me. I might settle for an “M5 lite” 2003 540i w/M-Tech ll Sport package and 6MT (titanium silver/black)
