Strange Noises
I never noticed many stange noises when I first got my car now im noticing a million.....One of them only occurs when I drive my car a little hard...If I drive decent but not grossly going over the speed limit and turn my car off I hear nothing...but when I drive my car hard (I live in germany I can run it as hard as I want to :biggrin it almost sounds like a compressor is running after I turn my car off and it seems to be coming from the rear passenger side wheel... After maybe 2 minutes or so it turns off and gives a little burst of air. What the heck could that be? :iono:

I've heard something that sounds like that after driving my dad's porsche hard before, i just assume that it's some sort of fan that helps the engine cool down after a hard drive.

I could be wrong about this, but many turbo cars continue to pump oil through the turbos to cool them after hard driving and then shutting down. There used to be turbo failure due to not properly cooling a turbo car down after hard driving. Pumping oil through the turbos after shutting down has all but eliminated this.
Also, many cars' electric fans, turbo or not, will continue to run after shutting down. |

I believe the conclusion at the end of this thread was its the electric water pump running after shutdown to prevent killing the turbos, so the noises you're hearing are perfectly legit.

I figured it out... It's a squirrel that's hanging on for dear life. The humming is him shaking violently after your 130+ mph drive. When he finally realizes you've stopped, he stops holding his breath. And yes, he's eyeing any wires for snack tommorrow
Trust me

I don't think there is anything in the rear passenger side wheel that will cause this other than that or tires? |

someone on e90 said the sound is a fan cooling the stereo amplifier. but that sounded fishy to me.
but my point is, that other people hear the sound from the passenger side in the back after shutdown, so its not in your head.

Do you have Nav? I read on one of the posts that the Nav computer is located in the rear of the car. Maybe it is the fan for that? It would make sense that the computer is working hard, after all, it has to keep up with you driving at 150 mph!

When I first heard the noise, I try to see if it came from the front, it wasn't. I don't have Nav either. It just hums for about a minute or so, then disappears. No one else hear that in their 135i?

Is this the link you are talking about?
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ise+rear+motor It looks like they also think it could be the DMTL pump doing tank leakage test. I hope that is all there is to it. |

Just experienced this too and for the first time. Sounded like air being slowly released from a compressor or pressurized chamber, and the noise originated somewhere inside the rear right wheel section of the car. I was outside of the car, and it lasted just long enough for me to pinpoint the general location of the sound.

I also had a sound coming from the rear after shuting engine down... it was a faulty module for a fuel pump that goes in the tank... according to the dealer. No more noises after it was fixed.
