And apparently the circuit that delivers power to the mainboard blows out with startling frequency . . .

Copyright normally does not apply to a single word/sentence. I think the only intellectual property that might apply is trademark.

This would fall into a trademark violation -- if all of the elements could be satisfied. Fact is, even with a valid trademark, BMW would have a tough time proving up its case in this situation. I wouldn't take this case.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I mean if another auto maker uses 335i or i335 then there might be a problem. In this case it's a completely different industry so other designations might not apply.

Can't trademark numbers like that, that's why Intel stopped calling their processors "i386", "i486", etc.

You can, but it's harder. Apparently it's entirely a the discretion of the USPTO: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?r...entry=72172718 http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?r...entry=73768165 http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?r...entry=73127572 http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?r...entry=72350803 |
