Just picked up a killer gaming PC
I just picked up a new killer system.
Intel i7 975 Extreme Edition 3.33ghz 12gs RAM Nvidia GTX 285 1g Graphics card 1TB HD BLURAY player Vista Home Premium 64bit (w/ free windows 7 64bit upgrade) 3 year limited warranty and life time tech. support I have been researching this for about 3 weeks and thru my research I can say that Alienware and Vigor are RAPING people. I found a place that built my machine that if I had done thru Alienware or Vigor, would have cost me almost twice as much. I obviously know that building your own is the cheapest, but I don't have the time or the knowhow. However I did find a sweet deal thru this place. I don't think I can list who it is here, but if anyone is looking for a killer system at a reasonable price without having the hassle of building it yourself, PM me. I got my system to run MS FlightSimX as I am a pilot and use it to stay proficient in instrument flying. I have found that the average PC, just can't hang with full weather in FSX, and I didn't want to upgrade in 2 years, so I figured this system will be pretty current for at least 4 or 5 years, and I can upgrade individual components as needed.

sick system, now how much did you pay?
![]() p.s. a 295 GTX would've been the best choice, but a 285 isn't anything shy of great p.s.s. FSX is lacking in realistic environments and seems to be HUGE resource hog....will wait for the FS 11 which probably won't be out until holiday 2010 |

Nice, I did the same thing about 6 years back. I looked into getting an Alienware computer, but I found that if I built it myself, it would be 1/3 the price.
Unless you're buying a standard pc, I dont know why you wouldnt just build it yourself, so much cheaper! Nice computer, except for the vista ;-) Im waiting for windows 7 to come out before I get my next computer.

The base FSX is pretty good with a standard PC, but I use the G1000 and that seems to take a lot more resources and drops the frame rates a lot with full weather. As far as FS11, I am not sure that is going to happen. You do know that Microsoft demantled that group a little while back right? Maybe they will all come together away from Microsoft to build a FS11, but I don't think you will see it out of Microsoft.

Also with SP2 out Vista is pretty solid these days, a lot of the bad press of Vista was pre SP1 and definately before SP2.

12GB of ram seems like overkill. Crazy rig though.

Yeah, but the price difference between 6 or 8 to 12 wasn't much
My goal though was not to have to upgrade for awhile, I think I will accomplish that.

Great build but....
Nvidia GTX 285 1g Graphics card Heres your problem. That VGA is going to bottleneck your CPU and RAM when playing games. Should of gone three way SLI. Or double 4870x2s atleast.

The 4870x2 is great when it's not microstuttering or overheating your rig. The VGA is not going to bottleneck RAM, as there isn't a game out there that will come anywhere near utilizing 8GB, let alone 12. RAM is not usually a problem with games. At least, games are nowhere near as demanding on RAM as they are on your GPU and CPU. That being said, the 285 is a great single card solution at the moment, and 1GB is plenty for up to 1920x1080 or 1200. There is a difference between a benching computer and a gaming computer. The things you mentioned may be good for upping your bench scores, but games won't know the difference between 6GB and 12GB of RAM at this point, and at the resolution I mentioned above, you won't see any difference between the 285 and the infamously issue-plagued 4870x2 in pretty much every game currently out there. And that CPU is just sick. |

5 years from now... games will use 12 gigs of RAM and that CPU will be bottlenecked by the GPU he has. He should wait for a few years and get the most powerful single GPU he can find. SLI and Crossfire are alright... but they cost too much money for just a 20 percent increase of performance + the power requirements raping the earth and maybe your pocket (might not be an issue for this guy though)

I play games on my PS3, when I have time, which is almost never these days. I have a full time career, a 4YO daughter, and working on becoming a flight instructor part-time. My hard-core gaming days are waay behind me, lol
