help me pick a watch for GF.
Hey guys, thinking my GF needs a watch badly. We've only been together since June, so I'm not comfortable dropping more than $1k. I've been thinking a Tag Heuer would be the prefect fit i.e. dress it up or down and be able to wear it every day. But it's on the cusp of my budget, most models are over budget.
For reference, I do like watches very much. I alternate my Tag and Cartier. Any suggestions? Don't wanna get something lame from a not reputable maker (gucci, or the like). Not sure I like Swiss Army either. Thinking possibly Baume Marcier. Any idea's would be appreciated. Thanks! This is the one I'd like to get ideally:

Does she need a watch because she doesn't wear one, or because the one she does wear every day is thrashed?
IMO I think that spending a money on a nice watch is a waste if she isn't the type of person who wears watches regularly... it'll just end up in a drawer not being worn. That being said, tag makes some good watches, I myself have a couple. If it were me I would stay away from the black faced aquaracer and get the aquaracer with either a silver/white/mother of pearl dial. Its a bit more feminine looking than the black face IMO. A buddy of mine got his wife the aquaracer model that has diamonds as the numerals... might be slightly more than you want to spend, but its a nice looking watch for sure. Other than that there really aren't a ton of options in this price range I would consider for women. It seems like for women you can spend $100 or you can spend $3000, but there isn't much in between like there is for men. I liken women's watch shopping to men's clothes shopping. Men just have way more options in this arena... Good luck |

Apparently she doesn't have a watch. But, expressed to me that she needs one to wear. I don't want a costume watch that only goes with certain outfits. The tag I posted above comes in different face colors. If you saw it in person, its really nice. Not large at all, and black goes with everything.
I agree. Not much in the middle for girls. Don't want to go out and blow $3k on a Tank, but also don't want to buy a technomarine for $250. Decisions, decisions. Whatever it is, I think it will be money well spent as she will use it.

Michelle watches are extremely popular for the ladies....but they will cost you in excess of your budget i think.
what about a nice movado??? they are reasonably priced...check out overstock.com....you can get her a nice movado for like 200-400 bucks.

I spent $500 on my wife's watch a few years ago and it was an excellent value. I bought her a Tissot T-round with mother of pearl face and real diamonds around the dial.
It has a stainless bracelet and can be worn with many different styles of clothing. I'm a big fan of Omega and more expensive brands but I also appreciate the value and quality of Tissot. I think it's often overlooked as a more accessible quality brand Swiss watch. |

The only problem with it is the lack of a second hand which she needs now, so she no longer wears it and I upgraded it for her. |

Actually, It's very popular/in-style for women to wear over-sized men's watches.

My understanding is that there's quite a new series of Aquaracers, now being 32mm. Maybe you'd like to have a look at these (picture from amazon). Seems like they're no more expensive than the 27mm models.
Best regards, south

I'm starting to like the look of the Michelle watches. But, I know nothing about them. Are they reputable in the watch world. I want a brand that is respected over a cheap watch with nice things on the bezel.

This can be had for $850 on Amazon.
Has anyone bought anything like this on Amazon.com? Anything to worry about?

From my watch buying experiences and research, online watch retailers are NOT authorized to sell the products. It voids any sort of warranty that the watch might come with - I think.
I've bought all of my watches at jewelry stores. Just some advice, I would make sure to buy her a watch that is made by a watch maker only. For example, not a Gucci, or Louis Vuitton, or David Yurman or Burberry, etc. In my opinion, Movado is so 80's and played out. Raymond Weil makes some nice watches to be had for $1,000 or less. +1 on the Michele as well, very popular with women right now. Don't get her one with a black face. The general thought about watches with a black face is that they don't "dress up" as nicely. White or silver faces are much better for women. Can you see her in a nice dress wearing a tag with a black face? Just my .2!

I would suggest starting off inexpensive. I've lost $3,400 in watches. Some people can't keep track of them or find they dont enjoy wearing them often. If she doesn't own one now, dropping $800 on something she wears 8 times would be somewhat rediculous. Plus a $300-400 watch seems very nice to someone who doesn't own one.
Perhaps that's just my own thinking.

I think you'll be fine buying a watch like that from Amazon. Sure its grey market, but its a quartz movement, so you really shouldn't have anything to worry about regarding warranty, etc...
Most likely the only time you would ever have problems is when the caseback gets opened up for a battery change. By that time (3 years +) your factory warranty will be up anyway, so no harm no foul. I would always hesitate buying a mechanical watch from a grey market dealer because of my previous experiences with mechanical watches. One example was that my Tag Monaco had to be sent in for repairs only a few months after I bought it. If I had purchased it from Amazon it would have cost me $250 by the time they replaced all the seals, etc... Since it was purchased from and AD, it only cost me the shipping to the repair center out east. I wouldn't even think of buying a Panerai/IWC, etc (especially one with an in-house caliber) from ANYONE other than an AD... those repair costs can get out of hand pretty quickly.
