Me too, I'm actually getting it because I plan on traveling a lot now that I am single and my first trip back to CT in a few weeks I want to be memorable. The 30D is a great choice. I currently have a 300D (aka Digital Rebel) and I'm about to upgrade to the 30D myself. The kit lens that comes with it is not great, but it's a good starter lens. One nice cheap (approx $70) addition is the Canon 50mm f1.8 Prime. It's a great portrait lens, fast, and sharp. My current "walk-around" lens is the Canon 17-85 USM IS, but it's kinda pricey, around $550. If you haven't found it yet, a great site is www.dpreview.com. It has an international readership, and great discussion forums on Canon Hardware.

You've got a great eye for composition, so the better equipment is going to serve you well...post up some results when you've got it!

What do you guys think of the Rebel XTi instead? I was talking with some other people and they said that I would never need any of the features the 30D has and that it is half as much and the lenses make the difference.

Sounds true enough. I've found that a LOT of features on high-end digitals are not really used... you could save $600 and get something lower end that will take just as nice of a picture, with less options. Assuming a quality photo-receptor, lense/filter choices really do make all the difference.
