+1 on the roadtrip unless you can get corporate relo. I was lucky when I moved from NJ to SoCal 2 years ago, they sent a truck, packed my house and unpacked everything at the other end. It really is the only way to move. Sorry I've no idea what it cost though.
I was amazed that they packed my entire house, then loaded the 2 cars! Then when I spoke with the driver, he told me that the truck was still 1/3 empty and that they were loading ANOTHER guys stuff behind mine before driving across to Cali!!! These trucks are enormous.

I shipped a car from Petersburg, VA to Seattle last spring for ~$1150.
When you go thru a service, you are actually dealing with a broker who contacts trucking firms. My price was for 'door-to-door' service, although the truckers idea of what that means is probably not what most of us think. For starters, they do need a place large enough to manuever the truck loaded with cars ... which is probably a large parking lot somewhere close to your home. I actually live about 2 hours from Petersburg and I-85 -- I had to drive there to meet them at a truck stop; they were unwilling to make a 4+ hour detour off their route and I had been waiting for months to ship the vehicle. That said, it only took 7 days to make the trip, and the vehicle was in great shape when it arrived. (I think it would have been cheaper to drive out and fly back, but that wasn't possible.)

moved from michigan to california for about 1000 bucks last summer. wasn't the e90, but gives you the $ range. open vehicle transport ...didn't mind cause of the vehicle that was transported, but if i had to with my e90, i might look into something covered...which was more moolah....which i don't have...which would mean, i'd end up with the open vehicle transport anyways...
