Going on interview tomorrow, any last minute tips or suggestions?
The kind of place where your Resumé won't matter much, so making a good impression will be crucial. Thanks in advance

If your interviewer's last name is Dumass, make sure you call him "Mr Dumbass" during the interview

haha sorry it was an inside joke. but on the serious note- I was gonna say make sure you know what you put on the resume and bring an extra one just in case. However, since the experience doesnt really matter, just be enthusiastic about whatever it is. Just try to think of possible questions they might ask so you can prepare for it. Anyway, goodluck tomorrow. |

My wife's a tech recruiter. For future interviews here are some big Do's.
1. Research the company and have a couple of questions planned regarding their business strategy or corporate outlook. Answers not important. Just makes an interviewer feel warm and fuzzy that you took some time to do some homework. 2. When you're at the point where you're interviewing for a position in your chosen field, show some enthusiasm for what it is you do. Nobody wants to hire a floater. 3. Communicate like a real person. It's okay to be nervous, but try to look at the interview as a two way street. This is the place you're going to be for a few years (hopefully) so get to know the hiring manager / your potential boss. 4. Bring extra copies of your resume. At least 3. And something to take notes on. Don't just show up. 5. Don't be late ... and don't be early. More than 10min early and you're desperate. Sit in your car if you have to. I'm sure she'd have a ton more, but those are the points I remember. Here's a couple of Dont's: 1. Don't under dress. But it can work both ways depending on the company culture. Over dressing can be just as bad. A good recruiter will tell you what to wear; pay close attention. 2. This one more applies to Tech. If you're a mega geeky dork, be an enthusiastic mega geeky dork. About the related technology you'll be working on .... not Klingon. 3. Take a shower, wash your hair, shave, put on clean clothes. Relates to above ... and yes, you'd be surprised. 4. Don't put something on your resume that you can't back up. In Tech, it's a guarantee that there's a master in the house and they'll call you on it. And then my personal tips: 1. Make the first interview you go on your practice interview if you haven't been on the circuit for awhile. Don't have it be a position you really want. You'll be nervous as hell, and you'll most likely flub it. I've had it go both ways, but it's nice to pop your cherry and the rest of the interviews are a piece of cake. Oh ... forgot to add a big one. Never, ever ever be afraid to negotiate the comp package. You just have to do it diplomatically ... don't make demands, ask and then compromise. Bigger companies don't have much room to work with since they've got set HR policies, but smaller companies can do what it takes for the right candidate. |
