How to drive infront of agressive drivers?
Hi guys,
today, I had a weird experience... some guy in an X6 was obviously in a hurry, and in front of him, another guy in a Skoda Octavia (smoke from the exhaust- probably a chipped 1.9 TDI) was rushing somewhere too... It started by me smoking the Octavia on the lights, I got like a 600m lead... I am slowed down by traffic in front of me... By this time, the X6 is in my rear view mirror, quite close... he tries to overtake me from the right (nothing wrong about that, since it was in the city), but there is obviously a slower car (Kia) in the right lane, on which I am making good progress (I cannot understand how he didn't see the Kia, since the X6 is quite high??? He must have known he wasn't going to make it). I overtake the Kia, but as I am doing this, the motorway expands from 2 to 4 lanes, and the Kia moves over... I already have my signal to the right, but as I no longer see the Kia for a moment, I think "oh, he might be in my blind spot), till I realize that, the X6 is already on its way into the right lane, but I am faster, he swerves back... All in all, nothing happened, the X6 returned to the left lane and overtook me... the Octavia, which I realized was behind the X6, gets behind me in the right lane, then to the left, and soon overtakes... So, what do you do in such a situation? Do you try to get out of the rushing guys way, and let him overtake you, or stay in your lane, and let him handle his business? I was going about 75 kmh, the X6 by estimate 100-110 Kmh when he tried to pass, the Octavia had a similar speed Personally, when I see someone slowing me down, I flash him with my high beams (as long as there is a place for him to go, i.e. a free stretch in the right lane), and wait like 2 or 3 seconds... if nothing happens, I take him from the right. The guys I met were obviously very aggressive, hanging on my rear bumper... I would step on the brakes, but I was afraid that the X6 or Octavia would be no match for the braking force of my brakes (2.0 tonnes vs 1.6 is quite a diff) P.S.: For those that do not know what a Skoda Octavia is, check here: http://www.skoda-auto.cz/CZE/model/o...s/Octavia.aspx |

A) I would NOT block him, because I don't want others to do the same to me (=leads to greater aggressiveness) B) I could not do that, because there was a slower car infront of me, even if I could, I would not feel doing that speed with other cars around me + a bus (which I do not have good experience with). Also, I turn was approaching, so stepping on the gas was not really an option... but I can imagine that with your GTR, it would be no prob (GTR = much respect for that car!) |

As to the worst drivers, I've seen much, much worse... Slovaks are the prime candidate... they love to overtake in blind corners, and never stick to their own lane when taking a corner... they like driving fast on their beat up roads... I'm always scared when I go there... Actually, coming back to the blocking thing, I must say that when I was in Slovakia, there were narrower lanes in one section, so 1 lane was 2m and the other was 1.5... being nice, I stuck to the right (2m) lane... but to my surprise, some a$$ started overtaking me, obviously in my lane... well, I got on the gas and blocked him... I'm not going to risk some Schumi wannabe scratching or hitting my car... |

I drove on that road 4 weeks ago with my m3, nothing pleasant during rush hour plus tons of construction in the area.
ps if you ever wanna see the craziest driving - visit Tortola, BVI

Now back on topic please - is it safer to get out of the way, or just mind your own direction? |

simply get out of the way. he/she is putting people at risk to begin with, no need for you to make him/her do crazy moves by blocking. you're not gonna gain anything by blocking them either.

Yes, if it was simple, i.e. there was enough room, I would have done it straight away... but what when a space frees up in the right lane: go for it, or let the aggressive driver take you from the right?

How I would assess an aggressive driver situation:
1. Are they right on me? 2. Am I driving a reasonable speed (i.e. the flow of traffic or 5-9 over)? 3. Am I in the rightmost slow lane? If yes, fuck that guy behind me. I don't give a shit how much of a hurry he is in, I'm in the slow lane, I'm driving either at the speed limit or 5-9 over or with the flow of traffic. He can move over if he wants to go faster. I'm not catering to his ass because he's in a hurry. World doesn't revolve around him. Then I play the game of positive reinforcement. The closer they get on me, the slower I go. The farther they go, the more I speed up. It's funny to see them get so pissed off and angry in the mirror If the answer is no, and I don't want to go as fast as him, then I move over when I can or I speed up to move over. If it's a one-lane road, I'll go up to 9 over but no more than that (don't have a radar detector and not interested in risking a ticket). If he signals to pass me, I'll slow down so he can pass me. Or I'll pull over depending upon how long the one-lane road is/if you can pass at all. |

Move.
You'd be pissed if somebody was in the left lane, and wouldn't get out of your way. You're either moving traffic or your sitting in it. The left lane isn't for hanging out. |

Usually people who ride the left lanes and don't move out of the way for anyone are usually older people and soccer mom. Not saying that riding the left lane and driving speed limit is a good idea but I don't understand why people tend to get mad when someone do this? I have seen many time who someone is driving speed limit on the left lane and some person behind is tailgating with literally 1 feet behind his car. There are no cars on the lane next to the person yet neither of them wants to move over. Instead of wasting your time riding their ass wouldn't it be smarter to just pass on the right lane and move on with life? |

I guess there is nothing I could have done in that situation, but just waited to check that the Kia was in the other lane, and I was safe to move over, which took some time... which the X6 driver may not have realized, but oh well... To the latter - of course, passing in the right lane is an ideal solution, were there no road rules. Here, it is illegal to overtake on the right out of cities... so you're risking a ticket, but so is the other guy, for slowing down traffic... but guess who they'll stop |
