Beach Shoot with Model
As requested, here are some shots from Tuesday's day trip to the beach.
I was excited to test the new Zeiss 35/1.4. It's definitely a joy to use, even if I did lose 60% of the shots to missed focus (Yes, 60%). Need a matte screen for the D3 if I can ever find one - there's a company (brightscreen) that has one, but their website is a little sketchy to demo a $200 screen. May just have to. I haven't really started editing them yet, just sorting the keepers. And as I do that, I like to mess around with different processing settings. I like how these are as the look lends itself to the feel of the images, but they're all different while I experiment. I want to eventually have a consistent look for all of them. Once I start editing more, I'll update the post/thread. Feel free to ask any questions. Or tell me how much these suck. And Please!, keep the comments tasteful. Cheers.

hmmm honestly not a huge fan of the editing..
The 2nd picture was not very flattering.. she looks a little like a zombie.. not sure if that was the intended effect or not.. The last picture I actually like but the post processing is so heavy on the face that she resembles a mannequin I find the modern Zeiss glass very easy to manual focus.. all you have to do is spin the focus ring or rock yourself until it "beeps" or focus confirms.. some of the older Zeiss glass (like the C/Y stuff) is much harder to manual focus because even if the adapter has focus confirm it's not always 100% accurate.. Even if you get a focus screen it will be difficult to focus anything > f4 or in low light situations.. Keep your current focus screen... I think if you shoot more with it you'll get used to it.. or start with larger f-stops and just go more wide open gradually.. --mike |

the processing was on purpose to mirror the unrealness of the depth of field in such a setting (daylight+artificial). the eye makeup was also intentional but we didn't think zombie. heh, it's just a rough gritty feel. but there's no post on the skin at all, just very minor spot healing on a few blemishes.
I'll have to try the same shoot without the ND, because what made focusing difficult here was that the light coming through the viewfinder was about 15% with these combinations, a split-prism would have rocked. thanks for the post comments, I'll keep that in mind when I go back to edit the set as a whole.

Chick looks like a zombie, the makeup is just horrible.. I'm sure you wanted a surreal look, but its just no good IMO.. Lighting seems kinda harsh and is even magnified with the PP. the best photo is #4

I like 4 the best too (mainly because of the composition and the model's pose), but the 3rd one was really nice as well. The makeup did not look good, imo. I agree with the zombie look on a couple of them, especially 2. I think with 2, the shadow on her chin is very accentuated and not flattering. It doesn't help that she's wasn't smiling a little either. That being said, in regards to post-processing, it seems like you went all out. However, I liked the lighting, mood, and colors of 3 the best.

seems like some people couldn't respect this.
I thought the pictures were very unique, wish i could take a second look to provide some more feedback. But that's life. Keep up the good work though, I know i speak for a few of us when we see your work we get inspired. Thanks for posting them (even if it were for a short time) |

rodi, why do you like the Zeiss glass more than a comparable Nikon?

Zeiss glass has some interesting color- and micro-contrast and warmth to its optics. It's definitely a different feel to it. Although I'm not sure I want to spend $2,000 on either brand's 35mm right now. I've been eyeing the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm for $550, though. Might have to grab that sucker. Just wish it was as small as Canon's 35L.

haha, I've gotten paid a couple of times.... not with money though....
like for instance the ex paid me for the horse and her photoshoot (she wants pictures for her business) and i was definitely paid for it however, anyone i do something for when not recieving money, i ask them to put a credit to my name and a recommendation to anyone who wants some shoots. So we'll see how that goes. |
