For the press launch of the 2013 M6 coupe, M5 sedan, 7 series LCI, and Alpina B7, BMW also brought out some M and Motorsports hardware from years past (and current) to commemorate BMW M GmbH's 40th birthday this year.

On hand was a streetable M1 (actually running), E92 M3 GT2 car, BMW GTP, BMW M1 racer, and of course the BMW 3.0CSL which you can say kicked off BMW M. Bonus gallery of another M1 from another recent product preview event.

That M1 looks fantastic! It'd be nice if BMW were to take the the body and put some modern innards in it are re-issue the thing.

Thanks for posting the pics Jason

That M1, and the M1 racer, are just brilliant.

Nah; it is a great looking car, but many things about it shout "80's!", so best to leave as is and start fresh...

And what was wrong with the 80s?

To me it still looks like a so-called super car. I wouldn't object if BMW issue a 2012s M1 either, but I don't think the old one looks bad, and with modern mechanicals, electronics and gizmos and whatnot, I'd have no issue with driving it.

Geez guys! So many things; but if you can't see it, just look at a Ferrari 308 right next to a 458 and tell me you would rather have the 308 body on your mechanicals. If so, then you are way retro in your tastes! And in all honesty, if a car were sold only on style the 308 would clobber the M1. Not to say I wouldn't love to have an M1 even with restored original mechanicals, but mainly as a piece of very interesting automotive history.
