Blu-Ray has far fewer movies available at this point. The cool thing about Blu-Ray discs, from what I've read, is that there aren't any trailers or out-takes or anything like that so they can cram as much detail into the movie itself. I also think the blu-ray players are a LOT more expensive. I'm just not sure if HD is teh same as teh $99 Sony one I bought that does teh up-conversion of the regular DVDs

Blu-Ray will win.... Target just confirmed they will carry exclusive Blu-Ray. http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/pro...726&ID=7235318
Few weeks ago Blockbustor stores also are exclusive to Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray has the most studio support, and they are outselling HD-DVD players and disks by a large margin. Companies like Apple also support Blu-Ray exclusively, look for BD drives on their new iMacs, due out in Sept/August. Blu-Ray has the biggest capacity also...FYI. |

word. my company makes the chips that goes in these babies. wait a bit for this to come down in price so you don't have to choose which format will win.

HD-DVD is 15-30GB. Blu-Ray is usually 25-50GB, but has the capacity to go up to 200GB(not there yet, very expensive atm).

Everything I've read suggests that Blu-Ray has higher capacity discs, higher video resolution, and is ultimately the better technology. Though, I am waiting until there is a clear winner before I start buying new equipment. Even though I was young at the time, this reminds me of VHS vs. Betamax.

I'm debating this myself. The Xbox player being under $200 seems like a no brainer, but if Bluray wins, I'll be stuck with software I can't play.
On the other hand I'll get a PS3 at some point - i.e. when there's a decent game available.... So spending $200 on the xbox player is a waste.

And to the OP, no need to waste money on getting a player that plays both formats. blu-ray > HD DVD

I'd flat out wait until it's clear who wins. To me it sounds like Blu-ray is the better technology and has more support. I think blu-ray will win out in a few years.
HOWEVER, the best technology doesn't always win. The best marketing does. Many said that betamax was better than VHS. Mac was better than PC. We all saw what happened there. |

First off, do you have a tv that is 1080p capable? Most likely not. If you do, then youre at the cusp of technology already.
Secondly, what is so bad about regular DVDs right now? I have an upconverting dvd player(oppo) and things look fantastic. I see no reason to drop major dime on a new player AND change my collection around. Are you about to go and replace all your dvd's with blueray/hd discs? No way. I remember when dvd players first came out and they were like a grand a pop and dvds were the price of todays video games($50). Now dvd players are like $40 at target and dvds are 14.99 on drop day. Sometimes theres no need to rush for the newest thing and pay top dollar when what you have is really pretty good to begin with.

Only because I have a PS3 am I biased to Blu-Ray. That being said, Blockbuster, Target, many if not all major motion picture studios (including Disney) all side with Blu-Ray. The discs cost more to produce, and will cost a bit more in the end, but they will hold more and I believe will win out over HD DVD. Just my 2 cents.

Well they don't like HD in general. Hi-def shows too many flaws that close up.

No I'm not paying $600 for a Blu-ray player or $300-400 for HDTV-DVD player.
Just like the flatscreen tv's and dvd players, they will come down on price...just give it some time. For now I'll go with HDTV cable
