I have nothing against Hyundai/Kia but I hate how they try to build super luxury cars to a budget. People that buy 100k cars aren't really holding a budget and would rather pay the extra 20k for a car that's 10/10 instead of a car that's a 9/10 or 8/10.

In their defense, I'll admit the exterior's are actually pretty sexy, especially when factoring price. You should check out the streets of Seoul, it's all about the massive black or white 518i with limo tint. The Hyundai's and Kia's actually fit in with all the german bling, but seriously, they are just ripping things off left and right.

Peter Scheyer is their exterior designer. He designed most of the good looking Audii. It's not really ripping off design, as much as poaching the right people.

Kia and Hyundai have both come a long way from what they used to be, and I have to give them props. Interior and exterior are much more attractive and consumer directed for those who don't want to pay BMW / Audi / Merc price tags, and still give them amenities that have never been available until now.
However, Would I go out and buy one? Shit no. I'm not a bloody wanker. |

That looks almost exactly the same as a BMW. Even has a iDrive type of setup. Koreans really need to stop copying other car manufactures and just think of their own design.

I'd like to know where the "cheap" plastic is in that pic? Looks just as good as anything from BMW in my opinion. And I personally very much appreciate Hyundai/Kia building 9/10 luxury cars that are every bit as functional and evocative as their overpriced competition at a reasonable price. My own Genesis sedan is a perfect example of a Hyundai that was designed and built as well as any other typical luxury sedan but for a much more palatable price.
Obviously somebody who only sees the badge of the car they buy won't give two craps about it because its from Korea but I (and every other Genesis owner) know that it is a very good luxury car regardless of origin. The only thing that is mildly embarrassing about this particular Kia posted is the rather blatant BMW shifter design. Still, not like BMW has a copyright on the shifter...

The seat adjustment toggles are also identical to Merc, and like the shifter, incredibly unique to their brands. I almost wonder if they're paying them off or something.
I will say that they're really closing the gap on the Germans (albeit still a ways behind). But the japanese are another story, I couldn't believe how bad the Acura's were that I sat in at the auto show. The TLX looked kind of cool, but the interiors felt like the subaru's. That brand really needs some help. Lexus is off in their own world and infinity is looking decent to good, the q50 equiv to the M3 will be interesting to say the least. |
