FWD 1er's coming to the USA...
AutoBild magazine has some renders of the next FWD 1er. They say that the new smaller 1er will be coming to the USA along with the 2er Active Tourer in 2016.

For those that haven't driven a Golf/GTI and a 1er hatch, consider the extra interior room in a fwd car. The 1ers aren't as fun as the VW's when similarly powered and have a lot less interior space.
I don't really want one of these, but for a compact car, it makes a lot more sense. Hell, my M Coupe was about as inefficient as possible in terms of interior space, but that wasn't really the point. |

Why not just bring the current 1series hatch over from europe. RWD>FWD. Then make the coupe the 2 series. The "active tourer 2 series coupe" should be RWD or if the 1series is going to be FWD, make it a "active 1 series coupe". Good job watering down your brand and making it even more confusing as to what car is what, BMW...
BMW: "All 2 door cars will be even number and 4 doors will be odd numbers." ME: " Seems simple enough, cool." BMW: except for the Grand Coupes ME: What the hell is that? BMW: Its a 4 door coupe! ME: So its a sedan... BMW: No, 4 door "coupe". We will make them available on all the even number/2 door models. Me: so it will be like an odd number/normal 4 door car? BMW: no, its a 4 door "coupe" Me: I think we are done here... BMW: Dont forget about the Acitve Tourer hatchbacks!!! oh yeah we are going FWD too. Me: fuck you.

The replacement 1er is not launching until 2018 so I fail to understand how they are reporting it is coming in 2016 when it will not be on sale until 2018 in Europe?
Unless things change I do not see the North American market receiving the Sporthatch. maybe additional variant . The look of the car is more like this , evolutionary but using the new technical design language of future BMWs. Most importantly the 1er will be more competitive in packaging the interior and will share large car technology including the split driver passenger screen.

Looks like BMW has plans to build a more expensive, less reliable Ford Focus to go along with it's more expensive, less reliable Subaru Outback (X1).
front wheel drive hatchbacks, "Motorsport" SUVs, and four door versions of two door versions of the four door version. Seriously, WTF is going on with this company?!?!?!? |
