How new and what OS is your PC running? If windows and supported USB 3 and 1 TB because it's cheap any name brand one they all are basically made the same the bloatware is the only difference. I've had good luck with Westyern Digitals or ones I've done my self.

I like Western Digital. Seagate isn't bad for a slightly cheaper option. Buy a big one IMO the 3tb ones are only a little more than the 1tb.

Any USB 3.0 device should be backwards compatible with 2.0, so there shouldn't be any worry about it.

He can also backup other data like music, image, or video files on the drive to cosume that space. While cloud storage does have its place, I'm not sure I'd want to store files there with personal information such as account numbers and the like.

What kind of scanner are you going to use for this?
I started the same project as you and ended up getting a business class multifunction printer which has an automatic document feeder that holds 25 sheets of paper and can scan both sides of a document. The printer has an internal hard drive which the documents are stored on that you can retrieve via a network connection. As far as an external hard drive, I would get two external drives from different manufacturers as a backup. |
