I thought the same thing. But I was wondering if the overhead lines contributed to leading lines effect or were just distracting.

the road to the right was already leading my eyes the power lines was more of a distraction for me and it made me split the photo from left to right

honestly i don't find it a particularly strong image either way. there's no real subject, the light is harsh and flat, and the composition is pretty boring.

Thanks, Josh. I wasn't planning on entering it in a contest. Just wondering if it's de rigueur to remove powerlines or if they can actually contribute (in whatever small way) to an image.

i agree, i actually like it a lot with the leading lines above,
maybe if u had more clouds or something, i would have considered it then, but what drew you to take that pic in the first place, i can imagine was the pole and the lines ....

Actually, I had just taken some wide angle shots across the street and was waiting for the combine to make its way closer to me before swapping lenses to shoot some harvesting images. The combine is in that image, it's just too small to see. I just noticed the ditch, the road, and the overhead lines all converged. As Josh pointed out, though, they converge on nothing and the rest of the image is open space. But that is the whole point. We normally remove things like power lines running across an image, but doing so can sometimes subtract from an image (or not, that's what I'm asking).

Honestly, if you stidestepped about 4 steps to the right, i could see the power lines adding to the image. They seem to be a little bit too over head to add to this particular image.

However, without the power lines at all, i think the picture looks a little too barren.

I've been having mixed feelings either way and wanted to be constructive, but the only thing i can see from my point of view is the side step and leave the lines in as they break up the negative space. And there is a fair amount of it available in this image.

I agree. Negative space is what makes it so hard to capture the vast flatness of this area. There are several places I drive by on my commute where can you can see to the horizon 360 degrees. It makes you feel small, but the vastness is hard to capture with a camera. Out in the basin and range area of the west you can stand at the base of one range and shoot across the huge, flat expanse to the other range and convey the feeling just because of the two ranges. The near range gives you a lift above the floor of the basin and the far range breaks up the negative space. Out here it's just plain flat. And when you can stand in one place and see 10,000 acres of corn and soy, it's amazing. Just damn hard to capture.

I know what you mean, every time i shoot out on the lake it's like, "how can i make this more interesting.... It's blue, and blue, and a line across it. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a cloud!"
