compatible engines for a 99 e46 323i

I just purchased a 1999 e46 5 speed that needs an engine. I was wondering if any of you technically savvy bimmer heads could advise me about what compatible engines I can swap into this car. I am trying to avoid warning light issues, etc.

Any advise you all have would be greatly appreciated.
