Being treated like a child in college? normal?
By college i mean community college...
I went to a small private university my first year after HS 8 years ago. I was treated like an adult; responsible for my assignments and test. No on held my hand and forced me to come to class, read, or do homework. If I failed to take a class seriously I got the appropriate grade. I dropped out to play music and don't regret a second of it but now I am back to finish a simple degree. I am taking 2 classes a semester on campus and the professors make it feel like we are high school freshmen. For my small business accounting class we had to do a "worksheet" and quiz on the syllabus and there is list of small stupid things that should not have to be covered with college students. Is this rare or are most community colleges this lame. |

I think it solely depends on the teachers. I'm several years removed from college and a few teachers had a percentage of your grade set aside for attendance. Which to me is BS for a class I was paying for. If I choose to show up day one and grab the syllabus and only show up the rest of the semester on test days only that should be my choice. That's just a touch of my beef with college professors haha
Anyways completely up the the professor. Shitty professors can ruin a course in a heart beat.

I took a couple of evening classes at a local tech college. Attendance/participation is 10% of your grade, and you fail if you don't attend at least 80% of the classes. It didn't bother me at all since I was there to get the most out of it.

I would drop out and go back to music. It pays more than mathematics.

It all depends on the teacher. I had teachers for some classes take attendence every class and if you didn't show up to so many you automatically failed.
My worst was my Art History class that I had to take to fill my blocks to get into business school. The class was at 9:30 AM twice a week with a teacher who spoke in a monotone voice. The class had roughly 150 people in it and he would call out attendence every class. If you missed 4 classes, you lost a letter grade. If you missed 5, you automatically failed. We would also have quizes once a week to make sure we were paying attention to him. My other horrible class was my Governmental and Not-for-profit Accounting class which was MWF at 8:30 AM. For those that don't remember or know, Thursday night is normally a party night at college and I went to this years #1 party school WVU. So I would show up still completely drunk to class on Friday mornings and pretty much fall asleep and not pay attention. The only reason I went was because the teacher took attendence and you would lose a letter grade after 4 missed classes without a valid excuse. This guy also never cancelled class even in snow storms. I almost killed myself one day getting to that class when my car slide through a stop light because I was coming down a steep hill. |

I don't think that being graded on your attendence is being treated like a child.
If merely show up during class times 10% of your grade is already 100%. |

We made tons of money. We had a sweet 89 Chevy g20 and living with parents was awesome. Jk. I didn't do it for money. But I am not going into any career with math. Have contemplated accounting for a back up but i would get too bored.

I think I have the same feeling with community college.
I took 1 summer course in community college because it was cheaper and a class I didn't really need for my major. I guess I was so use to university it really felt like highschool for me. Instead of lecture halls, it was a small classroom with ~35 individual desks. The teacher closed the door as soon as the bell rang and they said no cell phones at ALL and no laptop whatsover. I normally write notes on my laptops, and I was astounded! Needless to say, the teacher was horrible at teaching. He would just read out of the textbook line by line. The test were multiple choice and out of a test bank. Some of the questions had nothing to do with what we even learned. I was completely use to having hand written test. Almost none of the test in my university have ever had multiple choice. They also had that dumb attendance rule at community college. While I have never missed a class in university, i found it extremely dumb I had to stop the community college teacher to ask if I could go to the bathroom -_-

Community college isn't big boy college. It's basically an extension of high school. Shit teachers, shit courses. That's what you get when there's no requirements to get in. In the words of Chris Rock:
"Only college you can go to with a GED? Community college. You know why they call it community college? ‘Cause anybody in the community can go. Crackhead, prostitute, drug dealer—come on in. Community college is like a disco with books. ‘Here’s ten dollars. I’m gonna get my learn on.’”"

some classes I can see having an attendance requirement.
Language classes especially....since a portion of your grade is based on participation and speaking. You can't take a language class and just take test. But math... i don't see why they would care..
