Your neighbor made the right choice - the cars before 2007 are known for some issues, but the 2007+ cars are considered the pick of the litter, especially if he went with the auto transmission. I've often been tempted by the QP and research it every once in a while.

he only paid 39k for it. i heard they are cheap because maintenance is a nightmare. I am pretty sure he doesn't have any warranty.
still pretty cool that you can get Ferrari built car for only 40k |

I love the QP's...researched them pretty heavily, but came to the realization that the cost of ownership was just waaaay to much in my opinion.
On one of the Maserati forums I remember reading a post where one of the senior members said he would never own a QP with more than 30,000 miles. 50,000 miles is considered "extremely high mileage" by those guys. Another quote that stuck with me was "you can expect a light on the dash more often than not". |

for low mid 40s they are selling 08s with around 30k miles at local car auction. 3 cars and all 3 have airbag light on for some reason....

Maybe I hang out on the wrong forums, but I've read the E65/66 ain't that cheap to run either, and they certainly depreciate as badly as the Q-porte. The reason's the same as the Maserati - perceived high maintenance costs. Weird when you consider one's running a Ferrari engine and is considerably less common, while the 4.8L is in tons of maintstream BMWs. Edmunds' TCO estimator says you'll spend $17,300 running a 750i for 5 years (repairs and maintenance, $66k total). I can't see the Maser being much more.

The quattroporte is a super nice car, but so unreliable and unpredictable (unless you want frequent problems to be predictable. My gf's family had an 04' Neiman Marcus edition and basically gave it away when they traded in for an S600.

There is a saying that one should stay away from used Maseratis unless they have the kinda money to buy them new. If you buy them thinking the maintenance will be that of a 50-60k car you will lose your pants.
Oh, I've never heard that saying, but thought one should be created. |

^^^My neighbors had the same expectations from my Spyder. So everyone was somewhat understanding when the flatbed came to pick up the car. Until it was mentioned that the Maser wasn't broken, it was just due a service, and since I was 65 miles from the dealer, they sent a courtesy truck to pick up and re-deliver.
Surprisingly, a recent Lexus owner was quite upset about the whole process and mentioned quite frequently that Lexus wouldn't do the same for him...you know, Lexus being the bestest in customer service and all.

Someone says that when you want to buy a maserati. You have to but two at the same time.
You drive one and the second one is at the dealer for repair, once it's repaired the first one broke... |

I don't think any brand outside of Toyota doesn't have such tales of woe spun about them. Fords are found on the road dead, Fiat means fix it again, Tony, BMW means bring my wallet, Lotus stands for lots of trouble, usually serious. You can't believe the pundits...

Prices on those cars are nuts......now you can buy an 07 with 40k miles for only $35k at local auction and I see those selling for $50-60k at exotic car dealerships. I wonder how hard is it to sell on Private Party....
