ofcourse its the parents fault.. 18 year old receiving a ferrari for his bday?? dont you think something "cool" looking but less fast was more appropriate? i mean you guys in the US get a driving license at 16 right? (we at 18). s he drove 2 years but didnt crash (that we know of) yet crashed with his new ferrari. reckless driver or not he shouldnt be driving that car in the first place.

Panicos, I believe it is 16 in most states, I am not too sure though; when I moved back to the US I already had a Lebanese license. I do see where you are coming from, and you do make valid points. But hypothetically speaking- if his parents bought him a Nissan Tida (Nissan Versa here in the US), he would still be able to reach top speed, whatever that may be, and wrap it around a pole. His willingness to put him self and his cousin in danger by speeding rules out what car he is in. He will do it regardless. Sure maybe a car that accelerates slower, a speed governor on the Ferrari, or even waiting more than a couple of years before getting him an exotic would have prevented this. But if someone is going to speed, they are going to speed whatever they are in- take it from the guy in the 99 Hyundai Accent that passed me doing at least 100+ mph on the freeway today

That happened a couple of miles from my home. I drove by the scene last Saturday morning, not real pretty. About 75' of skid marks before he hit the woods and some burnt timber. The kid was not prepared for this vehicle and his father should have known better (performance driving school?).

"With great strength comes great responsibility" - he just forgot about the second part. FWIW, this would not have made the news had he been driving a Kia. Many more kids die driving lesser brands of cars but we don't fault their parents.

This is the point, I grew up on Muscle cars with lots horsepower, however the difference today than then is those old Muscle cars suck to drive, going above 60MPH they shock and rattle and you know you were about to die if you did something stupid. Today cars go a lot faster and drive smooth and you have no idea your about to die because the line between in control and out of control is very thin.

Well said. cars now have much higher limits and are much easier to bring to the brink. The one thing that hasn't changed however, is what happens when you reach that brink.

An intangible often not taken into consideration is the myth that these cars (sports cars in general) can do more than they can with anyone behind the wheel.

I've seen it in several car accidents involving drivers who know nothing about cars and how to drive them properly. On more than one occasion i've seen people in a new Vette, new M3, NSX, Supra, 300zx think that the car can do anything and promptly find out that is in fact NOT the case. Unfortunately they don't find out until their new toy is a balled up mess. All the incidents i've seen allowed the driver to walk away, but very close to that not being the case. Being so young only multiplies this effect most of the time.
