Basically I want to upgrade the memory for my computer. I was thinking of buying a 1GB DDR memory stick so I can have a total of 1.5GB memory. Here's my details below:

Motherboard:

Manufacturer/Model: ASRock K7VT4A+
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ running at ~2.2GHz
USB Support: 2.x Compliant
Error Detection Support: Non-ECC only
Chipset: VIA Apollo KT400A
Supported DRAM Types: DDR SDRAM only
Module Types Supported: Unbuffered only
Max Unbuffered DDR SDRAM: 2048MB
Max Component Density: 512Mb
184-pin DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1)
Graphics Support: AGP 8X

Memory:

I currently have a 512MB DDR266 PC2100 stick in one slot. Here's what the manual says about the motherboard:

2 DDR DIMM Slots: DDR1 and DDR2
PC3200 (DDR400) for 1 DDR DIMM Slot, Max 1GB
PC2100 (DDR266)/PC2700 (DDR333) for 2 DDR DIMM Slots, Max 2GB


Can anyone help??? Any help will be appreciated!

If your motherboard have only 2 slots. You can only have either 1GB or 2GB. If you want 1GB, get another same one (512MB DDR266 PC2100) and put it into the 2nd slot. If you want 2GB, get two 1GB DDR266 PC2100.

Can I not get two 1GB DDR 400 PC3200? I understand 400MHz would be better than 266MHz...

you can get 2 400mhz 1gb sticks.. it will take it just fine.

by getting two sticks, you will have to replace the current 512 with one of the 1gb, and put the other 1gb in the available slot.

that will work. You can give it a shot, it may or may not work. A lot of times, MoBos with only two DIM slots will want matching RAM. It may or may not recognize the 512mb ram, and if it does, you may not notice the performance gains because it's not matching.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. If it doesnt work, I'll sell the 512 and buy another 1GB...
