Michael Schumacher to Help Develop Mercedes-Benz Road Cars?

Having recently stepped down from Formula One racing, Michael Schumacher is reportedly set to play a role in the development of road cars for his former employer.

Schumacher was replaced at the Mercedes AMG F1 team late last year by Lewis Hamilton, but according to comments from team principal Ross Brawn, the seven-time world champion is keen to stay on and help develop road cars for the Mercedes-Benz brand.

“The development of models, particularly high-performance cars, is something he [Schumacher] enjoys very much,” Brawn revealed to Autocar.

Schumacher has already been signed up as an ambassador of AMG, just like fellow F1 ace David Coulthard. And he has appeared at a number of recent launches, including that of the SL63 AMG.

Additionally, Schumacher already has a lot of experience helping fine-tune road cars. He helped with the development of several Ferrari models during his time with the Prancing Horse, including the Enzo-based FXX, 458 Italia and even the California.

Let’s hope the first port of call for Schumi is the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG sports car.

Lexus can certainly use them. Toyota F1 team raced 168 some times and never won. lol

When reading through this thread I notice quite some prejudice and narrow-minded reflections without even knowing the talents, credentials and potential of the newly hired AMG guy. So I'll stand up for the guy (and the decision).

///M is a brand and BMW M GmbH a company, not a person. So, true, it is shaped by the people it hires. But, as life goes, people come and go. New blood can contribute to new ideas or improve existing ones, in other words: evolution (for better of for worse).

Just imagine for a moment that a guy developing Mini Cooper cars would be dropped in the seat of the ///M Division boss and, hence, gets important decision power. Are you gonna take the piss out of him because of his past experience ("For crying out loud: a Mini Cooper guy spearheading BMW M. Were their brains out to lunch or what ?!") ? Actually, you know what, this already happened:

"The [1M] development time of the engine was very short – engineers took only about a year to build it if not less, beginning in October 2009. In December 2009 the decision was made to build the 1M. Dr. Segler championed the project and made all major decisions. Took around 1 year to develop and test the car. People may tell about Dr. Kay Segler and ///M cars what they want, but without him, the 1M would not exist in the way we know it, or would simply not exist at all. He was the 1M kingmaker.

Give the AMG guy a chance. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I doubt. BMW will never have a car as good as the LFA, never ever. Hope I'm wrong, but again I doubt.

Lexus LFA is built in calibration with few companies, not solely Lexus. Yamaha developed the engine. Toyota quite racing in F1, because they never won.

And BMW quite racing because they never won. And M3/M5 engines are not developed by BMW AG, but by BMW M GmbH. So what?
