Took a little while to get back .. work sometimes gets in the way
As for my upgrade plans . Progress is a little slow as I am waiting for parts from Germany. I hope to have my project completed by spring As the biggest issue with the B&O system are the aluminum speaker grills (unfortunately it's also its biggest "feature") I am going to buy a second complete set of the grills and will mill out the inner portion (which is covering the speakers) and then replace it with black speaker cloth. This will require some custom work as the grills themselves are shaped and require some support on the backside so the cloth will follow the speaker lines. As for speakers I am currently looking at Focal or Dynaudio as a 2-way replacement for the doors. As the factory sub is lacking a little bit in definition and depth we will add a new subwoofer in the passenger footwell (something like the new Illusions if they stack up to others). Amplifiers we're going to install two (one for the sub and another for the new 2-way systems) Haven't yet decided which exact brand as the market is always in flux (had Pheonix Gold , Zapco Competition and others in the past, but they all vanished or got bought out ) Maybe something like Tru or Steg As has been said before the B&O system will be fine for 99.9% of the owners

I'm interested in your sub idea. I upgraded my sub by porting 2 JL12W6's from the tunk in the cabin. Sounds awesome. I will also swap out the cabin speaker prob to Focals or JL's because I feel the Mid range is lacking. I had focals on my last setup and liked them a lot. As far as the B&O system...couple of the reasons I didn't get it was because I'm doing my own and another is I think those big silver covers(especially on the doors) look tacky. They should have done a silver/metallic trim around the speakers and air vents. That would have been a nice touch.

I'm not current in car stereo equipment technology, but have a JL Audio W7 sub in my other car and it performs very well. I have just the standard audio in the M5 and it's acceptable, all except the bass performance. Very muddy and undefined, so I'm going to look into a sub as well.

Sorry for resurrecting a slightly older thread but wanted to check in on jmh progress. I too have B&O and Im not as happy as Ive been with other aftermarket setups. Question - is it possible to simply swap out the B&O speakers for aftermarket units (prob Focal)? Im guessing it wouldnt be easy, but is it doable (without running new amp(s), wiring, etc)?

No problem
I am still working towards the upgrade but as the car has been in hibernation not much progress has been made. Target time frame is end of April for the finished setup So far I've bought a set of B&O speaker grills as one of the major obstacles for better sound are the covers themselves. The aluminum covers cover the entire speaker and have a big impact on sound quality. So just upgrading the factory speakers and not modifying the grills will not give you a significant improvement. I am modifying the B&O grills to replace the portion covering the speakers with speaker cloth (might add some custom LED light around the grills, similar to the M6) but retain the outer part with the B&O logo/aluminum base. As for speakers we have not yet decided whether we'll go with Focal or Dynaudio. Also on the amp side there are a couple of options on the table. I'll provide an update in the coming weeks as we finalize the choices and setup.

What about a processor for the cabin speakers?

also addressing the speaker grills as they are the main restriction for sound quality with the B&O system

Hmmm, that would be the first Ive heard of adding aftermarket speakers to the OEM HU (man, I hope youre right!). YOu mentioned adding amps too. We will def need some type of converter (Clean Sweep or Audison) for this, right (man, Id love be wrong :-))?

Supplying them with a clean signal and enough power is the key , plus giving them the ability to breath and sound (ie open up the grills) More updates in a few weeks
