A drive through a Californian valley in an E39 M5
Not M3 related but this goes out to all the guys that don't drive their cars and let it rot inside the garage! Read the last sentence!

Loved the review up until you mentioned you don't know if you could give up your 530 as I have driven both and owned a 530 back in the day and they are not even mildly close in driving performance, pleasure or experience.

Cars are made to be driven. Not sure I agree with the follow up that shitty mods are justified if you drive the car, though. Still, I like the overall sentiment.
And, long live the e39! One of the all time great BMWs! The 530i is >500 lbs lighter, the same brakes as the 540i (I'd say better brakes/performance than the M5), and has HUGELY better steering feel. Not so cut and dry as you make it out to be. Outside of acceleration and sound, the 530i (with sport package) is a better driving package than the M5, imo. And you get a full size spare, unlike the M5 . That said, the sound/engine of the M5 does make a big difference. My point here is not that the 530i is better, so much as it is that it's not only an upgrade in driving dynamics as you're stating. Last edited by Obioban; 07-29-2013 at 09:23 AM.. |

Not particularly-- plenty of space in the engine bay for a S62.
I do think the torque of the S62 makes for a much more cruisery/less sporty driving experience.
