Best way to send a deposit on a private party purchase

Anyone know the best way to do this? I want to buy a car and fly down next week to pick it up. I need to send a deposit so that the car isn't sold out from under me, and the seller knows I am serious. How do I go about this and still protect myself? Thoughts were paypal, credit card (seller owns a business). Any 3rd party escrow or bank escrow programs available?
