5.1 Surround Sound??

Is 5.1 Surround sound worth it? I bought a Bose 2.1 but can't help that I'm missing something b/c I dont have the extra speakers. I know that most of the time those speakers dont even do anything....plus if I were to buy a surround sound package I'd need to buy a HDMI reciever which = more $$$...plus, you need more wires right? In order to actually get 5.1 you have to plug in your dvd/cable box directly into the reciever and the tv b/c the tv only outputs stereo? I was thinking about buying a 5.1 package from Klipsch and a denon or yamaha reciever

Yes.

You don't 'need' a new HDMI-capable receiver. You just need a receiver with 5.1 outputs. If you have an HD-format source, like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, then the HDMI is optimal for moving all audio/video information at once and it supports DRM.

My current setup has HDMI direct to the TV and the optical audio output from my PS3 to my receiver. Everything works well and sounds great. Although, I am currently awaiting my new receiver, since I want my HDMI switching to be accomplished via the receiver.

I have a Klipsch 5.1 package and it's great. 4 small satellite speakers, 1 center and a 10" sub. Connected to my Onkyo 5.1 receiver. It does the job. And yes, you are missing a lot if you only have a 2.1. The rear speakers give you a lot more than you think.

I've got some sony 5.1 channel surround with built in DVD changer and I would assume reciever for my TV. I don't care so much about that. My computer however has a 505w Klipsch 5.1 channel system with dual 8" woofers in an enclosure. Sadly they don't make it anymore, they only produce 2.1 speakers for PC now.

My father bought a Bose 3-2-1 boxed system, spent 2-3 times as much on it as I did for my pieced together system. I bought a 5.1 Pioneer receiver, a Sony center, and four Sony floor speakers (each with an 8" woofer), and it completely blows his away. I don't even have the sub yet, and it's much nicer. There's just no comparison--in cars, I don't like rear fill, but in my living room, it's another story.
