Placing M4 on jack stands?
Any tips on placing the F8x on jack stands? I see it has 4 really nice jack points, but if I'm lifting with the jack I can't put the stand there also? I lift the rear by the diff in my E36, but I really hate to do that on the M4 as those cooling fins look really long and delicate.

There is a central possible welded jacking point apparently in the front, right in the middle of the metal cover (skid plate type thingy. Or, this may be a good solution: http://www.jackpointjackstands.com/

I can only speak to my cars, but there may be a central lift point in the front as FTS said, plus you might be able to lift the rear at the diff. Not sure if the f8x is different, but that's how I lift my e92 and 335i. Once in the air, set the jack stands under the side jack points and lower. Good to go.

Thanks, might just (carefully) use the diff for the rears. I do remember something about a central jack point on my E60 M5. I think I'll need to tilt one side of the car up a bit to get my jack to it.

In the back, there are two black metal pieces (one on each side) that control arms connect to. I place jack stands under those.
Haven't figured out the front yet.

Please don't jack the car up using the diff. You will crush the cooling fins and possibly crack the diff housing as it is not designed to take weight.

You can use a piece of wood to protect the fins. With the loads the diff sees on acceleration, especially in this car, I wouldn't worry about it not being able to support the weight. Plus there is no where else in the rear to jack from AFAIK

Update: Using one side of the black "lower A arm" connection basically acts like a rear central jack point because this car is so stiff! Once the rear is up, just placed a jack stand at the far side rear jack point. The near side is only about an inch higher and place a jack stand there too. No need to mess with those delicate looking diff fins. Don't forget to put some good wheel chucks in front of the front tires!
Found the central front jack point (I think), but probably really need 2 floor jacks to safely utilize this to put the front two jack stands under.

Lots of bad advice going on in this thread
-NEVER lift from diff. You risk damage to cooling fins and/or diff -lifting off center at red arrows has potential to be Very Unstable Instead lift/jack at black Frame cross support pictured between the red arrows just behind the diff in the above pic..... you may need to cut a piece of 4"×4" lumber to fit between the exhaust pipes so the jack can support area. You may be able to use a piece of 2x4. On my e92 I need a 4x4 be safe |

I lifted from the same black frame cross support you're talking about, just lifted about 10 inches off center where its actually bulkier and where it connects to the lower A arm. It wasn't unstable at all. Either way though, don't forget good front wheel chucks! Quote:

I was researching this and found this thread... Aren't you guys overthinking it? There's a page in the manual that just says and shows to use the standard 4 jacking points next to each tire to lift the car for wheel changes.

Read the thread. We're talking about putting the entire car on jack stands using the stands at those 4 jackpoints you're pointing out. That way you can take all 4 wheels off at the same time.
Update: I had mine on 4 jacks stands. Had to use 2 floorjacks to access the front central jack point, but wasn't too hard. Ramps would also work.

So I was wanting to put my car up on all 4 stands today to remove the wheels before my trading partner gets here. Seems like that will be quite difficult if I don't have two jacks?

1) Raise rear up as described earlier (Place chucks in front of front tires). 2) Put 2 jack stands at the two rear jack points. Set the jack stands fairly high. Release jack from black suspension support near diff, now car sits on front tires and the two jack stands. 3) With the car now raised and tilted forward, there is enough clearance to slide a good low profile jack to the front central jack point. Run the jack in at an angle like from the driver side door. Be sure not to have the jack exactly where the front jack point is. 4)Now raise the vehicle from the central front jack point and place the remaining 2 jack stands at the front 2 jack points. Lower car. Done! Hope this helps.
