I wasn't suggesting a defense for VW. This emissions cheat was no accident. It was clearly intentional. I was just trying to describe how something like this can happen in an otherwise honest company. I still respect VW. They are no Enron. Of course, if I owned a recent VW diesel I would be very pi$$ed off. We may never know how many people were involved or how high up the management chain the offense extended. If someone ever comes forward with the inside story it might make for an interesting book or movie (Interesting to me, anyway. I'm an engineer but I'm intrigued by how large organizations tend to fail. The NASA Challenger/O-ring debacle is another example - worse in that lives were lost.). |

No, just a plain-old 3 series.
Do your taxes go down as your car ages in Belgium? To be fair, in my state the rate is a lot higher than $35 per year when new. It goes down every year until it hits a base rate of $35. Last edited by CirrusSR22; 11-08-2015 at 01:29 PM.. |

If I owned one of these I'd be totally ticked off by this offer. How about you, an insult? A prepaid card for $500 and a $500 "dealership card" I get to spend at their dealership? Wow, what a deal!
VW to offer U.S. diesel car owners $1,000 'goodwill package' Volkswagen AG's U.S. marketing operation said on Monday it will offer $1,000 worth of credit cards, of which half may be spent at VW dealerships, to owners of certain diesel models the company has admitted do not comply with government emissions standards. The automaker said eligible U.S. owners of Volkswagen and Audi models equipped with 2.0 liter TDI diesel engines can apply to receive a $500 prepaid Visa card and a $500 dealership card, as well as three years of free roadside assistance services. Volkswagen has said about 482,000 cars with four-cylinder diesel engines had software installed that allowed the engines to pass government tests for smog-forming nitrogen oxide emissions, but pollute at levels far above government limits in normal operation. http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/compa...8QQh?li=AA4Zjn |

Friends family had their house burn down. Insurance gave them a check almost immediately for $10k to use while the rest was worked out. It was just a "hold over" until the rest worked out. I think too early to be ticked off.

Really sucks if you move here though, because you'll be hit with the 7% fee when you go to register the car you brought with you. So don't buy anything expensive before you move to Georgia, or you'll be paying thousands in taxes twice. |

I think the '07 M6 and the '14328d are right at $50.00 + $25 for the inspection sticker. The i8 is about $250 + $25 for the IS, the X5 is $75 + $25 for the IS, the Ford Fusion is $30 +$25, and the 535GT is $85 + 25. Btw, the diesel is good for 2yrs. All in all, not to bad. Especially when compared to our friend, Philippe. Which I am still floored about. |

Doesn't matter if it was a Ferrari or a Ford, registration fee is the same for cars in most (but not all) states.
I pay about $45/year for registration renewal on the cars, about $65/year for my truck, as they for some reason charge more for trucks. No other fee's. Of course there are taxes built into the fuel prices (again, it is different from state to state) and most states - mine included - charge sales tax on used cars. |

We pay property tax on our cars in CT. I think I paid over $1k between our two cars.

More on how VW cheated diesel emissions test
Besides using a "fool the EPA" motor control mode, VW also cheated by overinflating tires to 51 PSI and mixing diesel fuel with the engine oil. (Apparently these last two tricks are legal, whereas the special mode is not.) The German newspaper article supports my theory that VW began this diesel emissions cheating years after they had committed to their "clean diesel" corporate strategy. When the VW engineers told the VW executives that the emission standards could not be met, the decision was made to cheat. The "code only" trick they chose must have seemed very attractive: no product cost and low risk. If four students didn't stumble upon the excessive NOx, VW might have gotten away with it.
From ExtremeTech: "More information is coming out on the specifics of how Volkswagen managed to do so well on diesel emissions testing. ... from the German newspaper Bild am Sontag, quoting VW engineers and internal reports." "The German newspaper said it talked with several Volkswagen engineers and learned that tampering with the testing process began in 2013, the year after departed CEO Martin Winterkorn said VW would reduce CO2 emissions 30% by 2015. VW’s technical wizards found the goal impossible to meet through engineering wizardry. Instead, they turned to trickery." "One tactic was to increase tire pressure to 3.5 bar or 51 pounds per square inch, 10-15 psi higher than most cars run at. A stiffer tire has less rolling resistance and better fuel economy. A tire pumped up that high, especially with low-profile tires, might be more susceptible to blowouts on potholes. It would also be less comfortable for passengers." "Another trick was to mix diesel fuel into the motor oil, supposedly to make the car run smoother and use less fuel. It’s not clear if VW meant on cars built for customers or only for tested vehicles. Diesel is a waxy fuel with some lubricating properties — certainly more than gasoline — but thinner than motor oil, so it’s unclear if engine wear might be affected." http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/2...nly-in-reverse |
