I've also heard the opposite.
There were a lot of comparisons between Jerez & Carbon when the E9x M3 came out and the breakdown of the two were often listed as: Jerez Black Metallic Paint code - A73 The mix is : Color ( % of total mix ) Black ( 80%) Pearl Blue ( 7% ) Dark Violet ( 5% ) Light pearl blue( 4% ) Laser Green( 3% ) Pearl White( 1% ) Carbon Black Metallic Paint code 416 The mix is : Color ( % of total mix ) Black ( 76%) Special Red ( 5% ) Pearl Blue( 12% ) Dark Blue( 4% ) Brilliant silver( 2% ) Silver( 1% ) If the above is true, both Jerez and Carbon use black base colors. Still, both Jerez and Carbon are quite blue under direct sunlight. Now I don't know how accurate these numbers are, but if someone can chime in I'd certainly appreciate it. What we do know, is that Jerez Black is derived from Circuito de Jerez in Spain. This picture of the circuit's logo demonstrates the color quite accurately. ![]() And Carbon Black comes from the color of carbon paper. ![]()

It doesn't really make sense to include colors that BMW calls "Black" anyway. Otherwise you also get into the same subjectivity with greens, violets, silvers, etc. It's either called "Blue" or it isn't, regardless of how it may appear in certain lighting conditions.
So, unless anyone knows of any more colors that originated as M exclusive blues, I believe the complete, chronological list is in MFNATIK's post #19 above. |

I borrowed these pics from REVOLVER post about his Mexico Blue M3. I hope you don't mind!
Here are some shade/color differences between YMB, LSB, Santorini (not a true M color since I am not aware of any race tracks in Greece, but it sure is a beautiful place!) and Mexico Blue (Porsche color). |

If there are enough people in SoCal that have a blue M car that wants to get together and do a Blue ///M photoshoot then I'd be interested in participating in that to get a shade lineup. Jerez and Carbon cars are welcome just for shits and giggles too.

I could care less what makes the list or not. Just saying it's not that black and white with some colors. |

poll added. For reference these are blues, not blacks or silvers with blue in them. For the sake of this pool if BMW calls them black they are black, not blue even if you see blue.
