BMW 8 Series rumored to return in 2020

Then what the hell does the 7 series compete with? I know they've done a great job with the latest generation, per the reviews coming out, but it's almost as if they admit it's never going to steal sales from the S class en masse. So the thought is that if they come out with an entirely new model that it'll suddenly be a winner? It just all seems odd to me.

There was a super car planned, not to compete with the R8, rather with the 918 etc. A couple of prototypes were already build, unfortunately the project was scrapped by the new CEO.

I can't believe that super cars are not profitable otherwise the likes of McLaren etc wouldn't exist.

Maybe BMW just aren't confident they could build something to compete with the 918 etc . You'd have to get it beyond right at that level. It seems bizarre not to want to get in to the hybrid super car arena otherwise.

I think it's really quite odd that things like the M2, the M135i and M235i are repeatedly being described as the best cars BMW have made for many years that the focus is now going to be on even bigger models; but hey it'll be good to sit in the 8 or 9 series when it arrives in the showroom, and imagine the joys of trying to park it at work. At least it'll be comfortable to work in when you can't get it into a bay

It is still extremely risky to fund such a project. They already put a lot of time an effort into it, but unfortunately that the way these things go. A lot of of these special projects never make it till SOP. Especially when they are pet projects of certain board members that are replaced. In this case the 100 Jahre car was a Diess project. When he left, the emergency brake was pulled on the project. Maybe they'll still do something cool with that engine though...

As far as the R8 competitor talk....

I remember seeing an article some time ago saying that the next generation M6 would shave a substantial amount of weight. Something like 500lbs (can't completely recall). So if that is the case and the power level is around 600hp, then I would guess that would be an R8 rival right there.

I think this too late now.

The Vision Future Luxury Concept was designed after the design freeze for the G11/G12. The 9er will be derived from the VFL Concept.

However I hope the 9er is not the high end of the series expansion.
I would be excited about a M1 powered by BMW i with four electric engines 150 kW each and the new upcoming lithium polymer batteries.

ill try find the video it was at an auto show in 2015. a chinese guy asked him what gave you the inspiration? he said a lot of things. he then asked any other cars ? it looks similar to the 6 series and he said well yes and spoke about lines of the car and got the idea and lines from it and then quickly tried to cover it up lol
