Good question. The answer is more broad and complicated than can be fully explained here. But, here goes....

Side effects are just what they say - effects of a drug that affect systems in the body, other than the one intended. That is because many of the biologic and chemical pathways overlap with each other.

There are approaches where we attempt to target delivery of drugs to specific cells by putting an "address" on the outside of the drug to be delivered - for example - targeting a protein on the surface of cells in the lung that are not expressed elsewhere in the body. But, even that isn't perfect, because some proteins are expressed throughout the body.

If I understand your question correctly, you're asking if there are any advancements in eliminating viruses from cells that have already been infected. If that's not it, please let me know.

The answer is that it depends on the type of virus.
Some viruses, like HIV, become entangled in our own DNA, and is, at this time, impossible to "extract" from cells. There are treatments to limit its growth, but with the frequency of mutations in the virus, it will eventually become resistant.

For other types of viruses, there are some treatments which help limit spread and give your immune system a chance to fight it off. On average, it takes 4-6 weeks to mount a specific immune response - whether the infection is viral or otherwise. But, not everything will result in an immune response by a persons body.

I agree with you but my first experience when taking a flu vaccine was horrible. I'd never had a flu shot ever in my life. I typically get the flu once a year, sick for a week, then all better.

The year i let my Dr administer the flu shot i got the damned flu 5 times that year 5! FIVE TIMES!!! WTF?!?!? I was very pisses and still somewhat bitter about it, if you can't tell.
