Apple Car Play add on
Can this be added aftermarket to the g30?
By BMW directly or do you need to order this as an option? Have my car coming but it is without Apple car play, would like to add this feature if possible at port or dealer. thanks for help. |

If asked the same before, and someone mentioned this was a feature you can get added later, they even suggested that if you get it later you have the option of trying it for two weeks and if you don't like it can get it disabled again and your money back (in Europe). Didn't verify this with my dealer yet

Thanks, I am hoping you are right. Very interested in this option. Upset I could not get car in time with this and do not want to wait another 2 months for a re-build.
thanks again. |

A comment and a question on CarPlay ...
One of the video reviews that I saw was somewhat critical of the CarPlay implementation in the G30 because it only filled about two-thirds of the iDrive screen, leaving the right one-third blank, even when using apps like Maps. The question - Does anyone know if we'll have automatic access to new apps that are added to CarPlay? So for example, if Waze is made available to work with CarPlay, will it automatically work with older CarPlay implementations, or will we be stuck with only the apps are available at the time of original purchase? I just don't know the tech well enough to understand this.

I've read that Apple Play is redundant to iDrive interface at its best. I'll be interested to hear what G30 owners have to say about it.

i've seen a video of a german car magazine where they show the airplay function and i didnt see much that you dont get with idrive, also as said above you only have 2/3 of the screen for carplay and the other 1/3'r is for idrive, i wasnt impressed that much and dont think its a real value add, the only thing that would be interesting to me is if cisco webex would work with airplay so that i dont need to get my laptop out when in a call (and not driving!)

This is correct about adding after delivery. You can just order via connected drive. I did this in my F80 (UK). I then cancelled it again because the idrive integration is better.
I don't like the lack of album art on CarPlay, it's placed as a faded background image that you can hardly see and only shows the song currently playing not the track listing. Unless things have changed of course. You also have to switch between iDrive and CarPlay you cannot use them both seamlessly. I'll buy it again when my G30 arrives and cancel it again if it hasn't changed. |

We have the wireless CarPlay implementation in our 2017 X5 and we don't use it. iDrive is very good and CarPlay seems like a step down. However, on rental cars (e.g. Ford Sync) I use CarPlay routinely because the standard human interface and UI is horrid while CarPlay gives me a better interface to work with. In the BMW with any modern iDrive you really don't need CarPlay. Maybe in the future with software updates CarPlay will work better.

I purchased the Apple Carplay as an aftermarket add-on in my G30. Got to say, I really like it, make a lot of use of it. Not perfect, as maps does not work in tandem with the HUD, but wireless CarPlay works really well and is very useful when the phone is tucked away in the charger
