Sometimes I don't want to be a BMW owner...

My 2013 X1 was hit in a parking garage the other day and is in the body shop. Instead of a lousy rental, I borrowed my elderly mom's Lexus HS. She doesn't drive anymore. Anyway, the point is this past weekend I was driving the HS, waiting in line to enter a 405 freeway onramp in usual crap Los Angeles traffic, when a 435 pulled a d**k move in front of me. He pulled around some number of cars behind me and then basically cut me off to get back in the onramp line. I know I shouldn't but I was in a bad mood, so I yelled out my window, "That was obnoxious." Yeah, I went there. I'm brave like that.

Anyhow, he put his asswipe head out his 435 window and said something like, "Someday you'll own a 100K car instead of a crappy Lexus." Swear to god. It was so stupid it made me laugh. Then I yelled back, "Wow. Living the cliche." Which probably confused him, as I just just thinking about the old joke about porcupines and BMWs...

I should have said, "Dude, you paid 100K for a 435?".

So I know it's foolish to yell stuff at other drivers in this batpoop crazy world. I guess the context was, when I get my X1 back I'll be thinking that other drivers judge me by the likes of guys like the dude in the 435. But what can you do...

By the way, when we finally got onto the 405 and had to merge into bad traffic, I could see the 435 pull ahead to the very end of the exit only lane and then forced his way into the traffic again. Charmer.

Maybe I trade the X1 for a Subaru...

Nah... it's time for an M3. Then he's got nothing to say.

Assholes drive all sorts of cars......BMW doesnt attract a disproportionate % of them.......but they do somehow get a disproportionately bad rap

hahaha - interesting story!

"'That was obnoxious.' Yeah I went there" that part made me laugh

This is So Cal, doesn't that guy know that the car you drive has very little to do with finances.

Same applies to most major metropolitan areas I suspect

So Cal is definitely a image oriented place. People drive around in Ferrari and live in a hut. Because people drive everywhere, the first thing everyone sees is usually their car.

Image oriented place is the people sitting waiting in service at for their BMW leases to be fixed; at least here...

I suspect that every metro area has their fair share of these types of people.

However, I feel that LA and OC are probably some of the worst in the world.

My neighbor's house cleaner has a nicer car than I do!

Yeah, I would've yelled back "Keep saving mate, maybe one day you'll be able to afford an M. At least I own my Lexus."

In all seriousness, I do think BMW's tend to attract assholes, but so do V8's and SUV's. BMW attracts an assertive driver too, which is often misinterpreted as asshole behavior.

The same people who get pissed off at me for jumping into their 2-second gap between them and the car in front are the people who don't notice the car behind them at the lights trying to get into the filter lane if they would just creep forward a bit to let them past. Inconsiderate, inattentive, vacant, bloody slow-arse drivers.

with financing charges, extra warranties and maintenance plans and after all M Performance parts and decals are accounted for, most 435 owners end up spending $100k. Idiots

wow. 100k for a 435...the dude got raped. lol

Never understood the idiots that try to pass 3 cars at an onramp only to get stuck behind the thousand cars crawling on the freeway.

Idiot who has a tendency to do exactly that here - or one to scream past three people only to get one car ahead at the next red light.

Local conditions may differ, but where I live people love to merge at walking pace and stop at the first breath of an orange light.

Generally speaking, you don't know when the lights are going to change, and you don't know if the highway is going to be banked up or free flowing. If we're talking about screaming onto a highway at peak hour that's always banked up - sure, dude's an idiot.

But I do it because eight times out of ten you can expect the driver to come to a complete stop at the end of the onramp then wait for a written invitation before merging into traffic. Knowing that you have the capability to merge into a 4-second gap in 100km/h traffic from a 30km/h rolling start means you want to get in front of any other cars on the onramp and get onto the highway to avoid being stopped at the choke point for 10 minutes.

Same with traffic lights, you don't know when they're going to go red, and 50% of the time, all your overtaking was for nothing. However, the other 50% of the time I get through the lights when I otherwise wouldn't have because I'm not stuck behind the retiree who's slowed down on the green light and screeched to a stop the second it goes orange. That can save 5 minutes off a 15 minute trip.

On the flip side, if I'm doing 108km/h in a 100 zone in the fast lane and someone comes screaming up behind me, I'll be the first to pull into the slow lane and let them past. I've never understood the attitude of people who sit in the fast lane at the speed limit and don't let people past "because I'm doing the speed limit, why should I pull over? They're speeding anyway.".

People love to hate the guy going fast & weaving through traffic (admit it, that's part of the reason people hate pushbike riders) - but little do they know they're ofent being just as much assholes themselves by being inattentive and obstinate.

OP here. Just an additional note, since I ended with "maybe I trade X1 for a Subaru." Well I had to return the Lexus HS and my BMW is still in shop, so this time I borrowed my sister's hybrid Subaru Crosstrek. Nah. Not trading my X1 for that noisy box. It's no bigger than the X1 but feels like it is. Also something wrong with electrical system and it showed different system alerts every time I started the engine. I'll say this, the hybrid Crosstrek is peppy for a hybrid, but it also doesn't get hybrid-type MPG. Sister's lifetime MPG is only 25...My X1 is 26!

And for those BMW drivers in thread complaining about slow drivers in fast lane, I'll never forget a couple years ago pulling around a slow 5 series in fast lane, and seeing the lady driver gripping the steering wheel at 12 oclock so she could steer and hold her cell to text at same time, with both thumbs. Best part was, she had a passenger. Meaning, all she had to do was hand the phone to her passenger and tell them what to text but no, she has to multi task in the fast lane...That was also west side 405. Absolutely worst traffic/drivers in all of LA, in my experience. Your mileage may differ.

Crap driving like that doesn't even get me mad anymore. Cutting off cars on an on ramp? Just like in the DMV, in LA, that is just another day getting to work. Not that it's right...it's just the way it is. *resigned*

Every time I get in the driver's seat I try to be mentally prepared for the worst case scenario possible, and frequently encounter one and just SMH.

Can you imagine being that other guy trying to cut into every lane? How stressful it must be to drive his nice bimmer recklessly only to get to work 4 minutes earlier. No thanks lol

I agree with you here. I do the same. However, I'm just pointing out the times where situations arise when you will not gain any advantage in positioning. As in gridlock traffic - just as the OP wrote.

I love stories like yours. It makes me realize how people really think about things. If you aren't driving like him then you should have bought a Hybrid SUV. How he drove is the typical BMW stereotype. I get a lot of yells at me at times but it's because I do U-turns that are LEGAL but they think it's 100% illegal and dangerous when no one was there but us (they are behind me). I think they were all women. Some say asshole or wow really with their window down being audible.

Maybe it was 100k CDN or another currency?
