Guys I am looking for some advice on a new pistol for target shooting. I am thinking of replacing my Glock model 22. Something with a 'lighter' less expensive caliber...perhaps 9mm. Trying to keep the budget to less then $1k. I have heard good things about the CZ 75.

CZ75 SP01 is a very nice shooter.

If you are looking for a "Target" 9mm check out the CZ75 TS

Are you looking for something specifically for target shooting, or are you interested in any kind of competitive shooting like IDPA?

If you like your Glock, you could always get a G17 or a G34 with an even longer barrel. Or you could get a 9mm conversion kit for your current pistol. If you're looking for something new, I really like the H&K P30 and the Walther PPQ M2. There's also tons of 1911's chambered in 9mm if you like that platform

I really like the CZ. Just found it fits me well, and I shoot well with it.

That being said, when it came down to me purchasing a handgun, I wound up purchasing a 1911 because I'm in love with them. And I shoot it sort of ok. Like broadside of a barn is definitely dead, but anything smaller is dependent on how I'm doing that day.

I suggest a G17 or G19. If you can get your hands on a M&P 2.0 I would get one 100%... The ergonomics combined with an Apex Trigger

Another CZ shooter here (USPSA and 3-gun). The other posters are correct the CZ is in an entirely different league than a Glock.

The bigger question is what's your eventual goal with getting a target pistol?

Do you want to be more proficient with your current Glock or other striker-fired pistols? If so, get a Glock 17 or if you think you might want to step into gun games get at Glock 34. (My entry into competitive shooting was getting a 34 to make me more proficient with my 19 that I carried).

If you want to just improve your gun handling skills in general, and step up to the amazeballs experience that is a steel framed pistol, then CZ 75/Shadow all the way. It's also not a bad idea to get used to having a hammer fired pistol with an external safety anyways, and the double-action first pull is good training for trigger discipline overall.

The CZ 75/Shadow is also great for dry-fire (which you should do regardless of what gun you get) because you can simulate a full pull of the trigger over and over again without having to reset the slide (as you would with a striker fired gun like a Glock or an M&P).

Do you have a range nearby that will let you try them both? You can scour internet reviews for years and still wind up with the wrong gun for you so I always push people to get hands on time if they can.

If you decide you do want a CZ, I'm fortunate enough to be in the same city as one of the largest volume private CZ dealers in the country, and I can get you a code for 10% off if you choose to go that route.

You've gotten some great responses and recommendations in this thread already from target and competition shooters; I would definetely chew on their advice as it directly addresses the type of shooting you're looking to do!

I'll try to offer my opinion from a different perspective all the shooting i do is exclusively from a work/service pistol perspective.

I second the G19 recommendation, unless you're deliberately trying to branch out and try other brands via your next purchase.

It is super versatile and fits many use cases. There are also tons of options if you're the type to customize. I dont think it will satiate your appetitte as well as some other selections could if you were looking for more of a show piece or something that "feels substantial" while in the hand, but judging by your post, that isn't the priority.

Im lucky enough to have had the opportunity to put ~7000 rounds downrange through my work gun (G19 Gen 3) in the past 2 years, usually 500 or so rounds at a time (per day); it has been a pleasure to shoot. I usually give it a sub-3-minute cleaning every thousand rounds or so. The only malfunctions i ever had was stove piping, and that was limited to a particular lot of ammo (mass produced, lowest bidder military ball ammo at that). It remains the only firearm that I decided to personally buy one of, despite having a plethora of cool toys at work to entice me into additional purchases.

I am absolutely positive there are a ton of other pistols out there offer a more refined shooting experience, but I think where the glock shines is bang for your buck. I couldn't honestly want for any more from it for the $400 or so I paid for my Gen 4.

You cant really go wrong, as they are easily resellable on the second hand market incase its not to your liking.

Have a cz75 and it is a nice shooter. Have trouble picking up the sights but mines a pre b surplus and the safety is rather stiff.

the more i shoot anything the less i like my glocks

for a gun the same size and similar price point i would take the cz P01 all day

i know i seem to be sh*tting on glock here, that’s not my intention, glocks are fantastic tools, if i had to pick one handgun for an end of days situation it would likely be a g19, you will always be able to make it run. But they are far less enjoyable to shoot then many other guns.

1911s are my favorite, czs are a pretty close second right now

That can happen, you've got to get your hands on a gun before you buy.

The CZ certainly isn't perfect, it is more difficult to manipulate the slide, especially in an emergency situation, if you have a jam, slippery hands etc.

I own two "no-longer-being-imported" Strike Ones; they're really fun to shoot.
