Wheel/Rim coatings
Purchasing a different set of wheels for M5. I would like to coat them in the best and longest lasting product (ceramic) available before installation. What would you guys recommend? Really tired of BMW break-dust and would like to make wheel maintenance as painless as possible.

Hopefully a manufacturer releases some Carbon Ceramic aftermarket pads soon. I went this route on both of my F10 M5's and never looked back.
The applications help when cleaning the wheel but do little to keep dust off of them; this has been my experience.

I concur with the last post. I've coated wheels and honestly it doesn't make a huge difference. Getting low dust brake pads is much more helpful but even then they will still get dirty.

It helps, but still requires regular cleaning, just with less effort. For those who fastidiously clean their wheels, it probably is less useful.

BMW brake dust is merciless ... I've not yet tried anything that's been remotely effective.

are the brakes on the F90 the same as the brakes on any other bmws? it seems unlikely that they'd have something totally different - given that there aren't any low dust pads advertised specifically for the F90, is there something else that will fit?
i had porterfield low dust pads on my F82 and they were great. |

So is the consensus to skip a professional ceramic coat for the wheels? I received my new wheels and am being offered a discount to do the ceramic coating from my pro as they are pretty much prepped for application and have no tires.
For my OEM wheels, I have tried all sorts of waxes and spray on coats. They make it easier to clean for one or two washes then it is back to normal. I know new brake pads are the long term solution. But wondering if a professional coating is even worth it or just continue to wash it well. Has anyone tried the home version of applied coatings like Gyeon Rim. Maybe that is a good alternative or in between solution. |

kdeleon the Gyeon products do seem to have good reviews. The company states the ceramic coating is designed to withstand the higher wheel temps. Has anyone here had experience with these products?

FWIW - I have the full Cquartz pro done to the car and wheels.
While I can do a $3 dollar coin op rinse and get most of the crap off the body - the wheels always still need the brush. Other wise they look dull. |

an aside: its highly doubtful that there are many different formulas for ceramic coatings. after using several different brands i'd say they are all roughly the same. i think its exceedingly unlikely that say gyeon and cquartz are markedly different - and I've used both. id say there are some differences in ease of application with some being very thin and easy to wipe off and some being thicker and harder to remove. of the several i have tried i found the opticoat to be the easiest application and the cquartz uk to be the most difficult.
i have some new wheels on the way and yes i will coat them but only because i have some left over cquartz dlux. i have not coated my current wheels because the effort required to remove and prep wheels is more effort than i want. at least the new wheels won't require any surface prep. the wheel coating claims need to be taken with several grains of salt. they just are not very effective at reducing brake dust adhesion. |

I can't imagine that iron-x would be much different than Sonax. The later I tried on my wheels and the previous only on the body paint. They both have the same active ingredient that turns dirt/iron purple. They both stink (as in smells). But I find on the wheels no matter what spray or formula I use, I have to agitate things with a brush. There is no spray and done. I am going to try the Auto Fanatic foaming solution. That is coming this week. It seems different than all the other solutions.
