Wow, there are people still using 56K. I first connected to the Internet using 2400 BPS. Now, that's like a 2.4K modem speed. Yep, I was chatting and messaging people around the world back in the early late 80's with it. I upgraded to 14.4 BPS which is 14.4K modem speed in 1993 which I ended up surfing the web with it. Slow, but it was still managable. 56K, in my opinion, was truly a breakthrough as you can only transmit 33.6K through a regular telephone line. When I first heard about 56K, I was like woah, crazy but I couldn't believe it. Crazy advanced compression.

I should mention to you that I downloaded DOOM demo using 2400bps modem. It took like an hour to download 1 meg with the XModem protocol. Things sped up with the Z and Y modem protocols though so it was more like 30 minutes per 1 meg. Pretty slow back then huh?

When I was in high school, I was spoiled big time. We had like the fastest Internet connection for a North American high school. We were downloading like 5-10 megs per second in this was in the mid ninties. The whole school network was connected with fibre optics.

when you think about it really though, internet speed has generally been in a same ratio with average size of downloadable files.... like yeah, 14.4 BPS sounds slow as fuck to us today, but remember, the programs and shit were not bigger than 300kb (if that much!?).... so i think the ratio of average internet speed to average file size has remained the same... if i tried to download a game, it would still take an hour... u get what im saying? cause i really dont know how to word this lol

Yes, those early DOS games, a lot of them were small as heck. I mean, I could fit like 5-10 full games onto one 1.44 meg disk. Then, there were the VGA or SVGA games that were over 2-3 megs compressed. Well, they took a while to download with a 2400 BPS modem. Although, it wasn't too bad with a 14.4 if you chose to download using the Z or YModem protocol.
