Hey guys!
I was wondering what the mechanical differences are between the S50 and the S52. I know the S50 has a higher redline (7400 rpm vs 6500 rpm), but that can't be the only reason the S50 is much more powerful. I also know that the S50 has individual throttle bodies, and the S52 has a more standard intake manifold, but are there any other mechanical reasons for the S52's lower hp rating, or is it just the way the ECU is mapped?

A big difference is the S50 has dual vanos system, S52 has a single vanos.

Maybe specify which s50?!?
There is a S50b30US, there is a s50b30 (european) and there is a s50b32 (european). As far as vanos goes: s50b30 (european): single vanos (I think on the exhaust side), s50b32 (european): dual vanos US s50 and s52: single vanos (I think on the intake side) Quote:
Compare torque figures. There is a direct relation between torque and power by means of rpm's. So to go into detail: the s50b32 also has a slightly higher maximum torque (but it also has slightly larger displacement). But to retain a good torque output at higher rpm's theres a tonne of mechanical adjustments needed, so yes, its mainly the high rpm, but to keep torque at that high rpm, you need those itb's, and you need those cams with crazy lobe profiles, etc etc. As far as build, the s52 and s50b30US are quite different to the euro s50, also in the bottom end. The s52/s50b30us have more of an m50 bottom end.

Not just single vs double vanos. The S52 has a 2-step system, while the Euro S50B32 has 'infinite' positions.
The S50B32 vs S52B32, are two completely different engines. The S52 is put simply a stroked M52 with hotter cams. The S50B30 and B32, while stemming from the same M50/M52 basic architecture, are very different. S50B32 - S52B32, The S50 head has much bigger intake and exhaust ports and bigger intake and exhaust valves, fed through 6x50mm butterflies and releaved through a tuned length exhaust manifold. Bigger compression ratio at 11.3:1 Larger cams Higher redline Dual vanos system. Although this is more for good idling and low down torque than max power. 3.5" maf / larger intake track. Not power related, but the EU S50's also have an oil cooler and the S50B32 has a different sump with two pickups and a scavenging pipe. If you know the S54, the S50B32 is like that, but its older predecessor.

May as well add, the S50B32 has its own unique DME, the MSS50, which was the most complex one at the time and it runs a 5bar fuel system and the Bosch blue 24lbs injectors to feed it.

generally its not only one thing that differs 2 different powered engines.. but the major difference is both has 3.0L and 3.2L..
Vanos difference, pistons, exhaust, injectors, manifolds etc etc.. whats the thing you want to know.. generally in US cars are less powerful because of the "thicker" catt's that blocks the engine to breathe out.. |
