Don't play the eMPG game. Calculate the miles/kWh from the on-board guess-o-meter, and cross reference it to a smart EVSE. The Kia is getting over 3.8 miles/kWh on a highway commute with the AC on, and goes up to 4.4 if you want to sweat a little or drive slower.

Our electrons are $0.15/kWh, and we're on a basic plan with no EV discounts.....

Yeah I did rMPG for "real". In my case using your numbers - 3.8 ml/kWh I got equivalent of 41-42 MPG. Assuming 0.21/kWh MA electric rate , 90% charging efficiency (optimistic), 2% "phantom" loss (way more in the winter) and gas price at 2.60/Gal for regular. Looks like it's better to buy a Prius for way less.

I had a Kia Optima rental car for 2 weeks a few months ago while my car was in the shop for repairs.

The car itself is ok... very cheap materials but they tried to hide it with a padded dash, soft touch door panels and comfortable seats. Apple Carplay worked flawlessly. There is absolutely no feeling at all from the steering. I thought the BMW F30 had dead steering feel, I was wrong. The Optima was way worse - rubbery steering and I didn't know where the tires were going. Add that to a terrible low HP droning 4 cylinder normally aspirated engine, it was no fun to drive at all.

The steering assist was very annoying - I had to turn it off. Every time it thinks you are drifting the steering wheel yanks the wheel. There were many times it made mistakes - when you are going on a off ramp, it thinks you are drifting and tries to yank you back onto the highway.

The positive side? At $20k for basic transportation, you get a ton of space. The back seats you could swim in and the trunk could fit many full size suitcases. That said, both the Accord and Camry are way better in this category. The Accord is sportier to drive, the Camry more comfortable and quieter. The Kia is neither.

I had a new Optima as a rental car several months ago. It was pretty decent overall. Generally speaking, there are few "bad" cars nowadays. All these midsize sedans are fairly similar; they drive the same, have similar interior quality, space, tech features, etc.

Hyundai/Kia's definitely got some transmission issues though. The Optima was a little slow to downshift and the Santa Fe rental I had a month ago was even worse in that regard. It's very scary when attempting to change lanes quickly and not having the power available.

I hate that shit too but it's really in every modern car. I had a Camry loaner a few months ago and I disabled it. I took delivery of a new X5 for my parents and shut that steering assist nonsense off quickly. So annoying.

Decent, like they don't break down left and right (herm, Fiat, herm herm). But you can still find wholly soul-sapping models around. We had a Hyundai Accent rental last time, it was a very sad thing indeed.

That being said I have been impressed with the Optima and other Kia models I tried recently.

Funny how people try push Kia to decent a car.
My friend bought Kia Niro EV, it's ridiculous ,car have 200hp fwd, you can't start from lights when wet without slipping(have to be very gentle).
Cheap materials inside,steering feel like rope connected to the road etc etc
Worst part she paid 55t CAD.
Btw range is under 300km.

Drove my aunts Kia Optima, felt like a tin can. Worse than i expected.

I sell BMW for a living, very much enjoy the Kia as a product in the market place and relegate Kia to provide wheels to my kids in HS and college students. If they had a better rear suspension I'd talk Kia up as a great car especially for the price point offered. Long term tho the cheap aesthetics and lower quality comes through.

it serves my world for if own or lease one for the kids or if on a light budget or even just need a extra practical car around.

Personally, I would never subject my kids or loved ones to fire prone Hyundai/Kia products.

My buddy bought an 86 Excel in 93 for $300 and it was a right shitbox, but it was functional. 33 years later they are matching or besting manufacturers that have been building cars for 100 years and the company is half that.

The amount of badge snobbery is astonishing. Every maker started somewhere, not as if they automatically became premium brands. Respect (and rep) is earned, not given. So if a supposed premium maker starts to slip, they shouldn't be allowed to rest on their laurels (thereby continuing to charge ridiculous prices for substandard products). The reason we have overpriced widgets is due to blind and stubborn badge snobs.

MAN!!! that thing is NICE with the driver assist. Super smooth and solid. The days of getting out of a Hyundai/Kia and into a BMW and having your mind blown are over. It was the reverse for me as I was like, "Damn this is nice!". All car manufacturers are catching up.
