AT&T shutting down 3G by February 2022, will impact telematics in older BMW models

This supposedly went out to impacted customers today by SMS text:

What to know about 3G going away
To bring you faster speeds and new capabilities, we have to evolve our network through a number of changes. One of those changes is phasing out our 3G network by February 2022. Once we do, 3G devices and some 4G wireless devices (those that aren’t HD Voice capable) won’t work on our network anymore.
Notice it says BY. That could mean before, depending on your region in the USA.

BMW did not handle the 2G sunset very well, so it is going to be interesting if they handle the 3G sunset any better.....

Well the older cars like my e46 actually ran on Verizon cdma, which is shutting down in December of this year.
They stopped allowing sub renewals to Bmw assist about 2 years ago in anticipation. Don’t foresee it being an issue at all.

What band(s) are the Gxx M340s, Z4s, etc and such on? 4G only, 3G/4G, 5G capable?

What would it take to retrofit, hypothetically?

I'm admittedly not too knowledgeable on what bands BMW uses.

G platforms all utilize 4G LTE for data. No BMW car supports 5G yet.

I believe that all NBT (not NBT-EVO) iDrives are 3G or 4G with no LTE.

LTE is the new minimum for mobile data.....

4G and LTE are the same thing. The new minimum requirement for voice calling will be VoLTE, but that doesn’t affect data devices. Just old phones like 5s, etc that had 4g for data but still called via 3g. And alll those people that have been clinging to that same basic phone for the last 10-15 years.

The good thing is that none of them will be able to call in and complain about it not working.

I'm surprised. Often when I drive through highways in the boonies, 3G is all that exists for hours at a time on AT&Ts network. If that goes away, presumably those will just become dead zones.
