The Formula One Race-Win Record Holders

This is rarefied air.

There have only been 7 men to hold this record in the last 70 years: Race Win Record Holders in Formula One.

In order:

Ascari
Fangio
Clark
Stewart
Prost
Schumacher
Hamilton

Mark Hughes wrote and amazing article about this which was published several hours ago. Please read it and share your thoughts.

Greetings MK,
Without question, this is the most cerebral and in-depth comparison of the seven GOAT drivers.

The descriptions of the driver's techniques, skills are incredible. And to read about the depth and lengths some of the drivers would go to in an effort to improve their racecraft shows how elite and gifted they were/are.

Thank you for posting this - it is the best in-depth information that compares these GOAT.

Good morning, Bruce!

I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I agree with you 100%. A cold analysis of the men and their careers. The detail in the article is very granular and shows that no matter the era, the cream rises to the top.

I liked the section on Prost...I was a big Prost fan back in the day.
He may have been a bit Machiavellian behind the scenes but his smoothness on track seemed effortless...Senna was almost certainly the faster driver but Prost was the better sportsman.

Really good information. This is why the evolution of HAM from Senna to Prost is absolutely amazing, to me.

And the funny thing about Prost is that he is actually much faster over one lap than most gave him credit for. I preferred Senna during that time period but I never discounted Prost. Fast. Clever. Relentless. Too bad about the political stuff and the dirty driving but an amazing driver, nonetheless.

Great post!!

Prost was a genius. He made it look so easy.

I remember when Prost and Keke were teammates at McLaren, Keke oozed charisma. The car drifting and sliding, the entertainment factor was huge.
Prost' style was calculated, clean and even boring when compared to Keke. But Prost destroyed him. He was so much quicker.

That was a great article. Must say how much I'm in agreement with Mark Hughes. Attended my first F1 race in 1965. We could not get over how smooth Clark drove...taking the exact same line lap after lap, he never lost the speed in the faster corners that so many others did. Must also say Hughes' comment on Rindt probably being faster than Stewart was so on the money...but Stewart drove with such precision (in comparison).
I could go on (and on), but suffice to say I think Hughes nailed all of the descriptions. I emailed the link to the three friends that I still attend races with..knowing they'll enjoy as much as I did.

Precision is the mark of each of the greats.

I was astounded to learn that Lewis was able to look at the direction the flags were pointing to determine wind direction and decide when he could brake later in certain corners rather than others because he had a head wind. All while managing the tires, racing, and adjusting the cars performance parameters on the computer interface that doubles as a steering wheel.
