Definitely looks much bigger, almost looks like an X3 in size upon first glance.

This is definitely the BMW that needed an update the most. The X1 has been getting a bit stale on the market as more competition has shown up and been refreshed completely. Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, and even Volvo and Cadillac's competitors are outselling the X1 (in the US market), some by close to double in sales. Not to mention this is probably one of the larger growing markets being that its the gateway vehicle into a luxury brand and SUV's are king right now. It should also be interesting to see how the iX1 comes into play, as that will also be the cheapest BMW EV soon.

I hope it's much larger on the inside

Like the way the first generation X3 was

The current generation is way to tight for me

X1/2 is a mystery to me: why pay inflated BMW prices for a flimsy interior, compromised ergonomics and a FWD platform with the obvious 60/40 distribution which many none premiums can match or eclipse?

To be honest, the current X1 is actually a great vehicle for what it is and for. The only drawback was the interior. The materials were good for its class but the design was pretty much a downer.

If BMW fixes/improves it for the upcoming generation, should continue to be a huge hit.

It's an SUV, not everybody is tracking their daily drivers.

Plus, people who have high-powered BMWs as their first cars speak highly of the X1 as an agile city cruiser/grocery getter. It doesn't beat an M3 of course, but it does beat its competition in driving engagement, and I think that is what matters more.

I guess an M35i (analogous to the X2 M35i) is the most we can hope for. Well that, or the iX1 kicking ass in some M-performance/high-performance trim...

No way the FWD platform will get the B58

Not this one, but it's all but certain that there will be an iX1 further on in the upcoming X1's lifecycle

I know it's a pipe dream, but the way these new chassis look on the X1 it really seems in control. I know lots of people don't like saturation in the ///M division, but I'm the complete opposite. I think there should be a new ///M car and the X1M works. I enjoyed driving the X3M but it's too large of a vehicle for what I like. The X1M would be perfect size-wise.

Agreed, but it has to be nerve racking making those improvements as it will make it more palatable for some X3/5 buyers to step down.

Looks like it's wearing the same wheels that were available for the X2 35i. Make the same 306 hp engine available and a few interior tweaks and they'll have a great package to offer. My former car was an X1 with the M-Sport package.

It's a not-so-mini Mini.

Hmm, have you looked at Lexus UX, a vehicle that debuted two years ago, it's nowhere as good as the X1. Smaller trunk, super slow, worst interior, no pano roof etc. The only edge Lexus has is the suite of standard safety features. Only thing I see the X1 missing is BSM which is ridiculous in this day and age to not even have as an option on a luxury brand.

I am actually looking at the X1 as a current replacement to S/O's Lexus RX350 whose lease is ending in a couple months. Not everybody needs an X3 etc. We don't since we have no kids therefore the X1 does make valid sense for some and while old still offers better utility than some modern competitors namely Lexus NX/UX....

When I heard that BMW was jumping on the FWD bandwagon, I was positive since I thought that they would become more affordable.
Building a FWD platform is negative for almost everything, except interiour space and of assembly activity & of assembly material.

No, what they did is sticker it FULL price for top margin. This vehicle is way too expensive for how it drives. And it doesn't drive like a BMW, a real one that is. The few occassions I drove it were all seriously underwhelming. But I have to admit that I don't like my X3 either, I refer to it as our "mutant wannabe all terrain". At least, it's RWD biased and that's something you can feel in daily driving (don't need a track for that, accelerating out of any T-junction is sufficient).
