In the event that I just can have one vehicle to do everything, I would pick an X5M. |

Here's your answer if you have the money.
Otherwise, I drive a M2 Comp and my wife has a new GTI. You'd be surprised how much stuff you can put in that GTI. You can actually put a bunch of stuff in a M2 Comp surprisingly. Hell, you can even put 2 shorter adults in the back. And if you need to go somewhere farther, take the VW.

I always wanted a true M car but always needed a SAV to tow my utility trailer for Home Depot trips and just more storage. Never thought a m40i would solve both my wants in one vehicle. While it’s not a full M, but it hauls ass for sure and handles well enough for me to have fun. I can’t stop smiling with every drive!

Wife and I decided a couple years ago to get a “beater” suv for the grocery shopping and long road trips. We got a used Acura RDX and it’s worked out great. We have our daily cars then another car that we don’t mind parking in a lot.

I pride myself in being relatively young & carefree and having a "sporty" two door that is more impractical than not. And I often lament about the constant stream of vanilla lifted hatchback CUVs that are currently flooding the market, at the demise of fun sedans & coupes. However... I spent an extended weekend in the woods with my significant other and our 80lb dog with a newly redesigned Nissan Rogue that we had hired and it kills me inside to say this but I get it now lol.
There was absolutely no soul to this box on wheels but for that I loved it for how unremarkably drama free and adept that it was. There was no way we would've kept the dog in the back of my 440i for 6+ hours and him not having a shit fit. The Nissan's CVT wasn't miserable, the modest 181 hp was peppy enough and returned 30+ mpg, it had the modern requisites like carplay, and the driver assistance packages made the miles fly by effortlessly. Had enough room to carry just about anything, and enough clearance to handle light off-roading. All that is to say, my vote def goes for a fun sports car and a more utilitarian CUV to handle the rest of life (if you need the space ). I wasn't mentally exhausted worrying about scratching the interior, dinging the exterior, scraping the underbody, etc. I was just content living life and for a lot of people who don't frequent the forum boards, that is more than enough. I think that the X3M is the best all-rounder that BMW makes right now. A good friend has one as his only car right now and loves it, he upgraded from a F80 M3 Competition. Pretty much the closest you can get to a M3 wagon.
Besides that, something like the last year of the diesel X5 with mixed with something like a Z4 or F32 440i is a good combination.

Lots of praise/recommendations for the Macan, and it's well deserved. But I've had Macans (Turbo, GTS) since the model's introduction, and even the best jack of all trades is still the master of none. It's not a dedicated sports car, not even close. But i love it because when we need to drive a bigger car the drop-off in driving experience is not as bad. The Toyota/Ford/GM SUV's and trucks are almost undriveable for me.
But I'm lucky enough to not be constrained to a single car so i have Macan + sports cars. If you don't have those constraints then i highly recommend 2+ cars. If you can only have one car there are some good recommendations in this thread |

Very good. Solid build quality and very few issues from a reliability standpoint. Only downside is the maintenance cost at Porsche.

I agree with the person above me that says maintenance is a bit expensive. One expense that you might not anticipate is how expensive the tires are and how frequently they'll need replacing. It's easy to forget you've got high wear rate, sticky rubber on there when you're driving a little crossover and not a 911 |
