Perhaps I'm naive, but $360/hr. for body work at a BMW shop strikes me as excessive. This is what my daughter was quoted for minor work on a '22 X1, and Geico will cover only up to 250. Any recent/current data points that would help put this in perspective would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You are finding out why GEICO advertises so much. They are terrible when it comes to claims. And a body shop recommended by GEICO probably won't do satisfactory work.

Most body shops in my area argue with GEICO and come to some sort of a compromise.

Just as a point of reference, I recently had work done to my Tahoe. No parts to be replaced, just a large dent pulled on a quarter panel and scratches sanded down and repainted. It was the left rear quarter panel and the rear bumper.

I paid $1300 cash but this was to someone I have an excellent relationship with. A friend would be a strong word but this guy gives me a great price because anytime I have people who need work I give him as a referral. As we all know, labor, parts/costs have significantly increased due to inflation so unfortunately we’re all realizing it in every aspect of life.

Not a typo exactly but a mistake. Turns out the actual number was a mere 340, and was given verbally over the phone; no further break down yet. Hope to get a written estimate tomorrow.

How so? We could choose our own body shop and GEICO paid 29K for the repair.

Not 100% comparable, but someone sadly rear ended my Taycan (fortunately at like 5 mph so mostly cosmetic). I took it to a Porsche certified collision center, which in general I would expect to be more expensive than a BMW certified collision center. The rates on the estimate are as follows:

Body Labor $48/hour
Paint Labor $48/hour
Mechanical Labor $167/hour
Structural Labor $125/hour
Paint Supplies $32/hour

I have no idea how extensive the damage to your vehicle is so I can't say how comparable these numbers would be on your car. On my Taycan, the damage was basically isolated to the lower plastic cover on the rear bumper and some scratches on the trunk and bumper, so no dents or frame damage or whatever to repair.

Recently had my X3 repaired at a BMW certified repair shop. Supplement from insurance company says they paid:
$50/hr body labor
$50/hour paint labor
$30/hour paint supplies

I would assume the shop gives a very different labor rate to someone calling seeming to be asking to pay out of pocket vs what they negotiate with insurance.

Don’t get me started here, I’m dealing with a trunk lid replacement due to moderate hail damage, plus two small PDR repairs on each rear quarter and they are billing insurance 93 hours labor across the entire job.

I'm guessing the 340/hr includes paint supplies and such. They might just need to break it down further and further for Geico to digest it.

I haven’t yet had to use the body shop for my BMW, but I have Liberty Mutual so that BMW collision centers are in network. So I wouldn’t need to negotiate the rates.

I use J&B Body Works - which is probably about as high end as a body shop gets in the Tri-State area. They billed my insurance at $85/hr for both body and paint labor on my X7. $360/hr is absolutely nuts.

This rate table is much more inline with what I typically see. In some remote regions I see body rates in the low 60s (Minnesota, etc).

$360.00 per hour is absolute lunacy. I would run away from that as fast as I could.

Body & Paint labor are $54-$60/hour from non-dealers around here. But a big caveat is the the dealer was quoting me less than half the time of the independents on my last body work, and slightly less on parts.

So in the end it came out to be almost the same and I just went with the dealer. But it certainly wasn't $360/hour or anything close.

in Northern California, body shop door rates are around $100-150/hour. Insurance rates are lower than that. for reference i am am SA for autobody national chain.
